Syria urged to step up efforts to ship Chemical Weapons

The global chemical weapons watchdog has called on Syria to "intensify its efforts" to help ship out its most dangerous chemical weapons.

A Norwegian frigate is ready to go to the Syrian port of Latakia to collect the weapons for destruction.

The chemical watchdog said it was up to Syria to mitigate the risks involved in transporting the stockpile to the port.

Syria agreed to abandon its arsenal to avert possible US military action after a sarin nerve gas attack in August.

Under a deal brokered by the US and Russia, the complete elimination of all chemical weapons material and equipment must be completed by the first half of 2014.
The "most critical" chemicals include around 20 tons of the blister agent sulphur mustard.

The arms are due to be taken to Italy, where they will be loaded on to a US Navy ship and shipped into international waters for destruction in a specially created titanium tank on board.

'Consider all options'The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the body overseeing the destruction of the arms, said the logistic elements were in place to pick up the weapons.

OPCW chief Ahmet Umzucu said in a statement that the international community was "poised and ready".

He said the UN, Russia, and other countries directly involved in the removal had agreed on how to escort the cargo vessels from Syria, after a two-day meeting in Moscow.

Security assets involved in the operation include Russian armoured vehicles, US satellites and Chinese surveillance cameras to protect the hazardous cargo.

Mr Umzucu said Syrian authorities now had to "consider all possible options" to ensure the chemicals' safe transport from 12 storage sites in Syria to the loading bay in Latakia. The port lies 300km (185 miles) north of the capital Damascus.

The OPCW earlier said that it did not expect to meet the 31 December deadline for shipping out the "most critical" chemicals.

Shifting battle-lines and road-closures caused by bad weather appeared to be the main causes of the delay.

The OPCW's head of logistics, Franz Krawinkler said these factors had disrupted delivery of essential supplies to sites where the toxins were being prepared.

The Norwegian frigate left the Cypriot port of Limassol on Saturday.

However, it will not enter Syrian waters until it receives the command from the UN teams in Syria.

Germanny congratulates Syria on agreeing to dispose of its category 1 chemical weapons. Also thanks the co-operation of countries such as USA, Russia, Norway, Italy and China for supplying the means to dispose of these weapons safety and hopes that the operation goes smoothly
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea encourages Syria to withstand pressure from Western hypocrites, liars and tyrants and maintain their chemical weapons stocks for the continued defence of the free people of Syria. Additionally, their glorious workers should strive for a communitarian effort to boost Syria's military capabilities. All is not lost - the unconquerable will continues so long as Syria possesses the courage to never submit or yield.
The Syrian Arab Republic will not be bullied by a Western hegemonic community, we are abiding by our timeline for disposing of our chemical weapons stockpiles and we do not need interference in our state sovereignty at this time, or in any future event. Syria points to the hypocrisy of these American proxies in attacking us on our chemical weapons stockpile while simultaneously ignoring regimes that routinely repress their people (which we have not done) in the Middle East, Asia, North Africa and Eastern Europe. We call on the US and her allies to pursue a more consistent foreign policy if they are to live up to their moralistic quest to spread liberal democracy to every end of the planet.

The USA has little to add, but is very attentive of the situation and reiterates that Syria must meet the deadlines for disposing of its chemical weapons stockpile or face extermination. Pure unadulterated annihilation by our machines guns you commie punks.

The USA would point out that it doesn't routinely attack its citizens unlike the Syrian regime. The USA would also question Pakistan's questionable recent stance on our transnational relations, considering Pakistan was a notable ally of the US' in recent years and has never sided with the DPRK.

PAKISTAN is simply observing that the USA has not totally destroyed it's G1 Chem weapons and observes that it currently hold x2.5 more than Syria so would like to enquirer whether USA intends to destroy its last stock pile to lead by example.

No, as the US has stated, it has not lost its democratic accountability and its stockpiles are in the hands of its people, unlike the Syrian Regime which has lost total legitimacy.

Malaysia strongly agrees with the watchdog for the eradication of chemical weapons before any potential misuse of these weapons impacts upon civilians across the country once again.
Russia continues to state it's support for the government of President Assad, any action not previously agreed upon in the UN against Syria would result is severe consequences.
France is pleased at the efficient nature in which other countries have responded to aim to rid the world of the Syrian stockpile. We urge Syria to push for further efforts to ship their chemical weapons out.
Syria and the European Union have signed two agreements between each other and Syria. However due to the Syrian government's crack down on its opposition, the EU is imposing an embargo on Syria. The EU has begun to support the opposition Syrian National Council and calls for the present government to stand down.
