Is it possible to learn further maths in 3 months ?

Hey, ive done A2 level maths (C1 C2 C3 C4 M1 S1) but am thinking of learning further maths in the 3 months i have before i go university because im trying to transfer to maths at a very elite uni from which ive got an offer. Do you think its possible to learn further maths in this time?

Yes. You work at a rate of roughly two chapters per day (therefore reading all the content within a week), and then spend about a week practising questions from that module and doing past papers. This should take you 12 weeks (3 months). I assume you're half decent at maths, so you should end up with a C minimum, most likely a B, and an A if you're good/lucky. The one week of practising questions is essential for you have to the required preparation for the exam. Another important note of interest, only do miscellaneous exercises and past papers (you only have a week to practise). You can pursue all topics that interest you at your own leisure after the exams. You might think I'm talking crap, but I did it, and I'm the laziest person I know (my motivation was to not suffer a bruised ego from doing crap).

However, considering your situation, I think it's just a waste of time.

LORDDEATH.
Learning further maths for economics isn't that important, so it's no great loss if you don't do it.

As for learning it in 3 months, depends how good you are. If you're someone who struggles to keep up in class, I doubt you'd manage it. If you're someone who looks at a new result and say "I understand it" every time, then you'll do it easily.

The A Level course can be VASTLY reduced if you compiled all the results and ignored all exercises, because so much of the course is just doing questions, again and again and again.

If you want to do it quickly, perhaps getting ahold of someones revision notes (quite a few people put them online) then working through those, doing an exercise for each result in the revision notes. It would help speed things up.

Good advice. Similar things come up in Further Maths A Levels time after time.

yh what it is, is that im actually trying to transfer from Econ to maths and need to learn the further maths. im going to school today to get a fp1 book off my teacher. fp1 seems similar to c4 in the topics. Thanks for the advice. really helped me. LORDDEATH mentioned 2 chapters a day. do u mean 2 chapters a day will get me through fp1-fp3 ? i need to learn some applied modules too init
I've about half way through FP1, its easier than C4 imo. FP3 is supposed to be difficult.

Why do you need to learn the applied modules?

well they recommend u to at least know mechanics modules if ur doing maths at uni rite? why are u learning further maths ?
You don't have to do mechanics modules. It'd help in the first year, since everyone is forced to do some kind of dynamics course, but in the same way you can avoid all stats, be forced to do some probability in your first year then never see it ever again.

It's recommended but in no way essential.

Sorry, i got confused. You are switching from Economics to Maths, got it. You dont necessarily need the applied modules. I would concentrate on the 'pure' modules and then if you have time, do any mechanics you can.

yh thanks for the advice ppl. i really appreciate it thanks.

Good luck with this!! I was supposed to do A level further maths during my year off, but ended up doing AS due to lack of time. But I was working full time so I'm sure you can manage it

Yes, doing two chapters per day will get you through all three pure and applied modules. Be aware, you have to spend a couple of hours a day to a few hours a day, almost every day. But like it's been iterated, it's perhaps a rather futile exercise (especially for economics). I only did it because I hated chemistry and biology, and needed a third A-level.

FP1 is supposed to be an AS module though, so it shouldn't really be much harder than C4, otherwise it would be contradictory. I personally think it's about the same level as C4 anyway.

FP3 was a bit killer, though. Especially when we didn't understand what our teacher was on about when he was teaching us Stats!!! The exam was horrible - except for STEP, it was the worst exam I have ever done. One boy in my class only answered eight marks worth of questions. I think that's a bit extreme, but you have to know the topics well and understand them, as understanding, ingenuity and ability to adapt methods are tested a lot more on the FP modules than in Core, where questions tend to be pretty standard.

no im trying to transfer to maths which is why im attempting to learn further maths in the holidays. im not sure if the university will let me do so. they may say take the year out and sit all the further maths exams and do STEP. i am not sure what is going to happen but the admissions tutor will let me know what i should do.
^ Which uni is it? I'm guessing Cambridge since you mention STEP. You'd have to be very lucky to swap from Economics to Maths. They would almost certainly say no and if they do say yes, they'd definitely get you to sit STEP.

I don't reckon I could have learnt further maths to an exam standard in 3 mnths. Familiar with the methods yes.... Exam standard at A grade no.

You dnt have to do FP 1-3, with Edexcel you can replace either FP2 or 3 with another applied module- I have D1 as my back up module in case i failed either FP2 or 3. so rly it depends which modules you do as to how long it takes, but you rly need the pure ones. on th other hand, i kno u said an elite uni, but most unis spend a little time going ova stuff to bridge the gaps in every1s knowledge.

Just learn the pure modules.

Stats and Mechanics will be of little use to you.

I will repeat that. Just do the pure ones. You have very little to gain from doing the others.

but ill still need to sit the STEP paper.

Just do the pure questions then, that's what most people do anyway.
