The primary reason is most likely religious reasons. :yep: Universities don't make massive allocations for same-sex accomm., as the norm is usually mixed-sex.

I would have liked to stay in mixed but I opted for a shared bathroom - so it had to be single sex.

The whole building was 4 floors - guys and girls living separately on alternate levels so it wasn't entirely single sex though.

Really depends on the university. If its a university like Sheffield where most of the accommodation is single sex then most people put there will want to meet others of the opposite sex and will hang out with them. If its just one small hall thats allocated single sex then its likely people will choose to go there for religious reasons or just because they feel more comfortable living with girls and could be less likely to socialise. However there would be nothing stopping you meeting people in other halls & at societies and on your course.

The people who choose tend to choose single sex tend to not go out as much, a lot of foreign students choose single sex and usually hang out together. If it's what you want then go for it but you may have to put in a little extra effort to meet more people and socialise.
