I'm not at Uni yet, I'm going this year, but out of curiosity I've been looking at Summer internships for next year and they naturally require references, do your lectures get to know you on a personal level to write a reference?

Like I said, I'm not at Uni so I don't know who you come in contact with, are there any other people at Uni that get to know you other than lecturers that can give you a reference? I know it's early to even be thinking about this but I'm just curious.

Your personal tutor/ academic advisor would be able to, but the guy who teaches a module that 140 odd of you do because its a compulsory first year module - he won't even know what you look like.

:ditto:

Though having only clapped eyes on my academic advisor four times in the last 2.5 years, I feel like I should go and make myself a bit more known

As mentioned, it'll be a personal tutor. If you do a year long placement they may come out and visit you (I think you usually get 2-3 visits a year from uni staff on placement to check your progress. It is for us anyway). A personal tutor will have a group of 6-12 people from your intake, so they know you a lot better. We see ours once or twice a week and just have a bit of a chat and he assesses our work, such as presentations. It's fortunate that he's also a senior lecturer, although it does make it hard to blag information when he's a doctor in that field.

Lectures are just too vast for them to get to know anyone and they never ask for your names like they do in school. You're there to learn, they're there to speak information. You can speak to someone easier in tutorials (the practice part after a lecture), but even so, they deal with a lot of people. Only one lecturer really knew my name last year because he was a tutor as well and we got on well.

Of the two I asked for references; one I knew quite well, he was my dissertation tutor. The other almost certainly didn't know who I was.

Indeed, you are worrying too much. Just go along and see them periodically, and it'll be fine

Mine knows me well, knows i'm one of the more hard working ones on the course. I'm often the only one to attempt to answer questions in seminars and make sure i visit their office occasionally. One of the other tutors (my personal tutor or whatever they call it) recognizes me outside of uni even after 5 months of not seeing him.

All my lecturers known my name but the course I do is specialist so there only 25 on our course. Because we have small lectures they get to known us somewhat. Plus I see and speak to my personal tutor most weeks as he teachers our course one workshop each week.

Lecturers won't know you until you make an effort.
You need to get to known them, that way they might remember you.
