Tooth Cap Procedure? any advice

Well I was eight, I slipped and fell in school on some black ice (the devil) and chipped half of my front tooth off. I went to the dentist and got some cement type stuff put on it, to form a kind of whole tooth. That worked well for about 6 years. But now, the cement has discoloured, and is now a yellow colour (maybe due to age or something) no matter how much I clean it, it doesn’t change colour. When I first had the cement thing done, the dentist always said sometime n the future I’d need a tooth cap? I couldn’t have it done the first time around as I was too young or so he said. So now due to the discolouration of my ‘tooth’, I’m going to get this cap thing done. Has anyone ever had one done? Does it hurt? And what exactly does it involve? (any needles)

Any help would be great

It will involve needles, as they'll need to fix the cap to something. So they're gonna need (probably) to drill into your tooth to give them something to fix the cap to. As you can imagine this is going to hurt if you don't get an anaesthetic, so you're going to have to endure a needle just this time, trust me, its better than the alternative.:thumpdown

No i don think they drill the tooth. I had a small cap, i think they work roughly in the same way, just by cementing an extra part of tooth like stuff onto your tooth.

They trim the tooth to make it smooth, them make the correct shape "crown" and cement it in place. Mine didnt hurt at all. All they used was that jelly numbing stuff. Might not be the same for you.
it will look really good once they do it...its like any other dentist procedure..a bit uncomfortable..but worth it

Press your finger nail onto your gum for about 15 seconds. That's what it feels like to be injected. I'm not too fond of needles either, but it's bearable.

i had one done. due some crazy drunken nite (still cannot forgive myself)!
anyways i spent way over 4 hours in dentist seat over a month they did loads of stuff.it doesnt hurt once they fix it so dont worry. and it will look good too!
also make sure when they put a crown/cap its not metallic from the inside. you dont really want someone to notice the metallic bit when you are laughing.
I've had a tooth cap on my front tooth since I was about 7. And I'm now 19 and I've only had to have one replacement since. The first cap I had fell off only because I accidently banged it on a bone china cup rather hard, resulting in it wobbling then finally falling off. It invovled no injections both times, only a mould taken of my front tooth, and a cap made. It really is quite effective and as far as I know painless. An injection may be used in some circumstances. I say this because my dentist was aware I have a huge phobia of injectios and therefore refused an injectional seditives. All you have to remember when you have one is not to chew so hard on food, and try to avoid heavy glass cups they're a nightmare!

I got hit in the face by a hockey ball lol. The injection hurts just like p00p said, for me they made a replica cap from a mold taken from my other front tooth, then they stuck a stick think into my gum and glued the cap to it. For the next few hours my face was swollen and it was gay, then when the anesthetic wore off i couldnt stop licking the new tooth. After a few days I got used to it, it looks better than the smashed tooth he tried to glue back in, or even worse a gap and its only a mild discomfort, i reccomend you go for it.
