Is leeds as bad as they say?

Sorry, I had to respond to this but I firmly believe it's hype. I'm from Manchester and have never been the victim of crime but I feel a hell of a lot safer walking around Leeds than I do in Manc (I'm a girl and have just completed a 4 year course in Leeds, going on to do my Masters there in Sept).

I even once had to resort to walking all the way to Hyde Park at 5am from the Cockpit and had not one ounce of trouble and even gained some walking buddies on the way. I probably never would have been able to do that back in Manc. I also lived on Chestnut Grove in 2nd year (adjacent to the notoriously burgled Chestnut Avenue in Hyde Park) and my housemate stupidly set his computer up right in front of the window in the downstairs front room, but we never even encountered anyone suspicious sniffing around.

At the end of the day, you can't generalise the whole of Leeds, it'll be the student areas and houses where belongings aren't secured or hidden. As long as you keep abreast of the news and have common sense, you'll be absolutely fine.

These comments are hilarious 😂 Leeds 6 has one of the lowest crime rates in the city. No one will get mugged in daylight and it's unlikely at night unless you're walking through a dark park. Only students get burgled and mostly cos they make it very easy for the burglars. I live in Hyde Park and have for 40 years, I've never been mugged or burgled or been a victim of any crime.

I've lived in Leeds on and off for 10 years and have never found in any more dangerous than any other cities (also lived in Sheffield and London). The only issues when I was a student were an attempted mugging (I got away in Headingley) and a car break in (also in Headingley). I lived in Burley for 5 years and had no problems whatsoever, it's much safer than Hyde Park which is appalling. No burglaries, muggings or car crime at all in my 5 years there. if you leave valuables on show/ easily available/ walk through Hyde Park at night with your brand new iPhone for all to see then you can fully expect to be robbed. Now I live in Armley (renowned for being a rough part of Leeds)) and have still experienced no issues.

Its fine. I don't know anyone who's had any problems in leeds and i know a lot of people there, got 2 friends in sheffield and they've both been spiked and robbed

Places to avoid are the places further from university that students don't go to. Harehills, Chapel Town, Armley, Beeston, Holbeck, East End Park are the most high crime. Petty crime is like any other big city. I've had bikes stolen but nothing major in the city. There are drunken people chavs around but not in Headingley which is very safe/student area. Burglaries are infamously common in Hyde Park/ Burley.

It's not the nicest of areas (graffiti, litter, etc.) but I felt secure enough walking around at night on my own.
