The Romanian Peril

I'm sick and tired of anyone who opposes uncontrolled immigration being painted as some kind of closet racist. The intellectual dishonesty of those in favour of open borders has reached insufferable proportions, and one wonders whether this is even about immigration for them anymore; it's about seeming right-on, and not coming across as illiberal.

I'm a Fabian socialist, red in tooth and claw. I'm active in the Labour Party and the trade union movement. My concern is the wellbeing of the English working class, and I don't think it can be gainsayed that mass EU immigration is injurious to their pay, terms and conditions. You cannot deny this unless you have jettisoned a belief in the laws of supply and demand.

New immigrants are more likely to work as scab labour, less likely to join trade unions, less likely to engage in collective action, and generally more inclined to undercut the existing inhabitants of the country. And then the revolting accusation is made that the reason there are jobs for immigrants is because the English working class is lazy and stupid.

That kind of anti-English, xenophobic nonsense is the most disgusting, self-serving, transparent crap I have ever seen. The reason they won't do those jobs is because they won't work for £3 an hour to clean up asbestos fibres. And for that they are labelled as workshy.

Shame on the pathetic, middle-class liberals who say this is a good thing (and usually said with a knowing smirk... you don't care, you get cheap plumbers and nannies and can pretend it makes you tolerant). History will judge you harshly.
