Protein Shake Dilemna.............

Hey all,

Basically, I do loads of sports. I weight train, combat sports, football, etc.

I know that I don't get enough protein considering I want results in the gym. Somedays I get maybe 30g when I should be getting 100g or so!

I also think i would benefit for recovery after weights............

Anyway, I'm only 15, and my mum is dead-set against me ever having them. She doesn't even have a proper arguement against them; she seems to think that they are some sort of steroid that will ***** me up! It's whey protein; not harmful as any scientist will say (hopefully  lol).

So what do I do; get the protein and have it without telling her?
Try to argue my point (almost impossible lol)?
Don't get it and face the consequences of having a tired body, with chances of building as much muslce as possible reduced?

thanks.

Thanks. Would you say it's really that beneficial?

yes
YES! she knows f.a. and if she's being irrational then ignore her. i did that. it works coz they see its not doing you any harm.

Just eat more food containing protein, i cant see why this is such a problem

LOL that's what i hoped for. She said she'd go mental if she ever found out; but to quote something from "The Waterboy";

"What you're mama don't know won't hurt her!"

Trust me; I would if I could. But at the age of 15, I can't really choose what I eat; especially when I have other siblings.

There is nothing harmful about protein shakes. Excess protein is converted into urea in your body.

when you're trying to intake relatively large amounts of protein, which is easier. eating 2 whole cans of tuna or having a protein shake? if you had to eat the equivalent of a shake in proper food it would take you hours. and you'd be sick of eating.

You should 100% get the protein shakes and you should certainly argue with your mother about it. As for protein shakes - there is clearly and most certainly no harm in protein shakes! I have been taking them since the age of 13. Almost all people who do professional sports take not only protein shakes but much more - protein has nothing to do with steriods:smile:

My parents had the same problem, but you should get them to talk to your trainers and a nutritionist doctor. I am sure it will be fine.

All the best.

Don't buy them weight gain drinks

They f around with your body and although you may be more muscular you may develop major problems because my cousins used to do it and they were frequently sick and had high blood pressure.

Take it if you must, but going to the gym and eating properly is safer.

Also your 15 - wait till your an adult because you are still growing and don't want to interfere with your body do you :P

I dont know anything about them, but to be honest I wouldnt start taking anything or training intensively at 15. It can be bad for your growing.
I'd wait a bit if I were you....keep at the sports though.

With your high levels of exercise you should be aiming for atleast 1gram of protein per pound of body weight, tell your mum that its basically protein derived from powdering milk - she gave you SMA as a baby right? Why not now?

Go to the doctors, with you're mum then out of nowhere ask him about protein shakes, and hopefully he isn't a fool and would tell your mum the truth about them.

Such bullsh*t about training inhibiting your growth. Talk to a proper doctor! Unless you do 200+ kg squats at 15 which would probably break your back at 15 unless you are properly trained.
