The majority of colleges have a college parent system where you get assigned a volunteer, usually from the same course in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year, to look after you and write you a letter before you arrive and then there will be some kind of event in freshers week where you meet them. Hill colleges tend to be single parent families and the bailey tends to have a whole family tree thing goin on.
Stephenson are just setting one up, and are asking volunteers...

im not touching it with a barge poll though! 'helping' freshers with their problems is so not my thing:p:
My college parents scared me somewhat.
My mother performed exorcisms and was in 5 CU's and on the exec of the JU (despite not being Jewish - discrimination laws or something).
However, everybody else I know seems to get on with their families.

Out of pure curiosity:
Do you have "families" for the first-year students to help them?If yes, in every college or just in some of them?
thanks

Yes, but the precise way they're structured depends strongly upon the college, e.g. Collingwood (certainly in my day, but I don't think it's changed) assign you one fresher parents, whereas some others will couple off two parents and give them two children, generating siblings etc.
