Oxford Colleges: bad choice???

Hi everybody,

I applied for the following colleges to read the MSc Management course at Oxford:

1. Balliol

2. Magdalen

3. St John's

4. New College

According to the Norrington table, these colleges seem very good.

But, when some of my professors (PhD FInance from Oxford) saw my choices they were horrified and told me that I should aplly to:

1. Merton

2. Wadham

3. Christ Church

Are they really better???

I don't know about the tutors for your course, so I can't really comment.

But here are a few interesting facts: Merton has the best food in Oxford. Word. It's stinking rich in the catering department - some old boy died and left his fortune solely to be used on food.

And Wadham is the gayest college in Oxford - if you go to Wadham, you will come out gay (according to reliable sources - sorry if I somehow cause offence).

And on an additional note, Pembroke is the poorest college in Oxford - you will pay through the nose for a small box in which to live - nifty.

Thanks for your reply

Definitely not going to Wadham!!! Like girls too much.

What about the other factors though

1. Reputation
2. Buildings

3. Location

4. Rooms

As I said, I don't know anyting about the courses that I haven't looked into - you should have a flick through the prospectus. However, I really don't think you should put that much thought into the college - they all have the same course - all that's different is the tutors and the accomodation.

Some have prettier and larger buildings than others, and if that's your thing, then apply to the richer, older ones (Balliol, St. John's, New etc)

The four colleges that you've applied to are big, old, and prestigious: all classic Oxford colleges. They have good locations too. Did your professors tell you why they were "horrified" at your choice? Didn't you ask? I was under the impression that college choice didn't matter so much for post-grad, as selection and most teaching is department-based: the college is mainly for accommodation and social facilities.

No they are not better. On this you are right. My personal top five mixed UG/PG collges would include all of your 4 (probably) plus Merton. So relax.

the NT only applied to undergraduate education..... AS a post grad, your department is far more important!

I personally would have gone for:
Wolfson
Linacre
Green

I did ask of course. I guess as my professors regard more academic colleges they were surprised I did not apply for Merton.
Besides,Merton, Wadham, Nuffield are more regarded for social science subjects.

Why are Wolfson, Green...better?

Going back to the main question is Balliol considered less academic than Magdalen or Merton?

Because they are specifically set up for post-graduates - many undergrad colleges ignore their post-grads and fail to offer appropriate support.

Wolfson for example is the richest and largest of the post grad colleges, and guarentees you at least you first year and usually one other year (if you go on to DPhil) in college accommodation.

Linacre and Green have similar set ups.

As a post grad in an under grad college it is very rare to get accommodation, and even rarer for the fellows to even give you the time of day!

Your last sentence is simply incorrect for most colleges.

I agree - I've not encountered anyone at a UG/PG college as a graduate who wasn't offered accomodation in 1st year or who thinks the tutors ignore them. In my personal experience, the entire staff of the college I'm at is far nicer to graduates than undergrads - even though graduates are a minority, they get far better treatment....

I know (very well) people at (or initially at):
CC - no accomm offered in any year of D.Phil ecept in extenuating circumstances. Came as a shock to my lab mate as he did his first degree while at CC.
Keeble - accomm not guarenteed (and Bex was mega unlucky not to get accomm for any year, dispite always entering the ballot), although their MCR seems quite close nit - and their karaoke nights are almost legendary.
Jesus - transfered to Wolfson due to attitude of fellows towards grads.
Corpus - as Jesus but to Linacre.

Got to speak to many MCR presidents during my 2 year reign as common room pres, who were continuously voicing concerns about the treatment of grads at UG colleges both in formal meetings and to the OUSU vice pres grads.....

I think you have highlighted that some aren't very good for postgrads. But there are considerably more colleges who do a better job and give a couple of year accomodation sometimes more. Balliol's accomodation is really good. same for Merton,Univ and BNC.

Why do some colleges seem to have a negative attitude towards graduate students? :frown:

Thank you everybody for your helpful answers.

Does anyone know what wan happen if none of my 4 colleges accept me for my postgrad course (hope it wont be the case anyway)?

What can happen next?

Will the department send my application to more colleges?

In my cond. offer they state: upon your securing a college place...

Michael
I don't know for sure but I think it's more of a formality finding a college and getting accepted by the faculty is the important bit. Don't take my word for it tho.

Would somebody know whether the depqrtment can send your application to more colleges if unsuccesful after your first 4 choices?
