I would use ordinary long division for both, but you can simplify the 1st one because it is the same as 291 divided by 14

could you go through it as its been a while?

Does 14 go into 2?

No!

Does 14 go into 29? Yes - twice because 2 x 14 = 28. but NOT 3 times because 3 x 14 > 29.

So write down 2 as your 1st digit of the result.

Now take 28 from 29 to give 1 and place the next digit of the original dividend (291) on the end to get 11.

Does 14 go into 11?No - so write down 0 as the 2nd digit of the result.

You have now exhausted all the whole number digits in the dividend so write down a decimal point after your '20' so it reads '20.'.

Now you can pretend that 291 = 291.00000.... and bring down a 0 from after the decimal point onto the end of the remainder 11 to get 110.
Does 14 go into 110 - yes it does?

I'll leave you to work out how many times and calculate the remainder!

Does this ring any bells?

I was imagining her despair upon reading the word "dividend" and seeing the > sign!

Chances are she won't remember it from school - at best it may look vaguely familiar.

Imagine my "despair" at trying to remember which was the quotient and which was the dividend and what any other terms might be called!

Some processes are better on autopilot
