A-Levels For Anthropology

Hello, im new here been browsing the forums for a while though.

I was just wondering what the perfect set of A-Levels would be for studying Anthropology at uni, most uni sites recomend a mix of science and arts, but wich subjects would be ideal from both the science and the arts groups.

Would apretiate any answer.

Cheers.

Depends on the degree emphasis really.

A) Start out with one from:

- Philosophy
- Politics
- Sociology
- History
- Religious Studies

B) If doing physical anthropology, add:

- Biology (esp. human)
AND
- Psychology

C) If not doing physical anthropology, add two from:

- English Literature and Language
- Film Studies
- Media Studies
- Archaeology
- Geography
- Spanish (if interested in Latin America)
- French (if interested in North and West Africa)
OR
- Any from part (A)

Just a guide. The main thing to aim with at A-level if you want to go on to do Anthropology is breadth.

What do you mean?

Are biology and Psychology a must if you plan on going into Bsc instead of a Ba?

Probably not a must, but certainly helpful.

Hey

Unless you are genuinely interested in psycology, i would say there are definitely better A levels to do, my freinds who do it really don't enjoy it and find it's mostly stats and memorising experiments. It's also not very well respected.

I'd think the best combo would be biology and history, and then i would suggest:

chem/phys/maths, something you find interesting and something you would enjoy (art/english/thatre studies/another science).

If you don't see yourself as scientific at all though, pick atleast one other strong artsy subject like english lit or geography or a langauge course.

Personally I think having good grades in respected subjects would put you in far better stead than just putting subjects that you think would be good for anthropology.

One of my friends who applied for Anthropology did Politics, Classical Civilisation and Maths at A2 and RS at AS level. She's going to Manchester but I think she applied for joint degrees, just can't remember what.

EDIT: I think she's going to do Social Anthropology and Criminology.
I'm still deciding whether to apply for english or anthropology. Next year I'll be taking A2s in English Lit, History and then either Geography or Theatre Studies. What would you reccommend? I won't be studying physical anthropology either way, I'm looking to study the social side. Ta

What's interested you the most this year? Geography would be useful for Anthropology, and Theatre Studies for English.

I'd go with Geography myself, esp. if you've already got English Lit.
Half of my degree is anthropology and I studied Spanish, Religious Studies and English Lit at A-Level. I took AS physics (but did quite badly!)

im doing religious anthrpology and took Religious Studies, English Lit, Psychology, Sociology and Theatre Studies.

It seemed like a good mix to me. I wasn't interested in the science side of anthropology that much tho so i didnt any science A Levels.
