Tampons - some questions!

:ditto: Also, which brand were you using? I've found that some are easier than others (although obviously it depends on personal taste).

The risk of TSS is tiny tbh, if you're clean, change it as often as you're supposed to, don't leave it in etc. Try to relax and get one with an applicator. good luck and give it a try, but dont force it, just try again another day if it doesnt work, you'll eventually get the hang of it.

I use Tampax compact. Religiously.

there is a very low chance of getting TSS - so small i wouldn't worry about it. as long as you change your tampon every so often, then there won't be a problem.

also, when inserting, try to relax. they are a bugger to get in when you aren't relaxed. obviously, being absorbant, they may make you a little dry for the first few hours that you use them, but as soon as you have used them for a while and are used to them, then it will be fine.

my suggestion to you both is to try wearing one around the house for a while to get used to them. if you have any problems, you are nice and close to a toilet :p:

again though, take them out when going to the toilet.. as they are absorbant (as i said) they will probably soak up some wee, making them not work, as they will not be able to absorb your period.. so change them every time you go to the toilet!

if you wear them at night, be sure to wear the highest absorbency.

Er, why? That will only increase your risk of TSS. You should only wear the highest absorbency when you need to. The time of day has nothing to do with it...

What the hell? How would pee be absorbed into your tampon?

There is no need to change every time you go to the toilet. Let's not be giving out inaccurate information here.

To the OP - I don't think it's really rare to not have tried them yet. I'm 18 and I only just tried them out yesterday. It made me feel like an idiot for all these years of pads though! SO much easier.

I have a question, too - is it ok to wear them even if your period is really light? Mine are usually only normal on the second day, and just light before and after. Would the mini ones work on those days or should I refrain from using them at that time?

Reply 26

you can wear them if your period is light - get the tampax 'mini' or whatever's the lowest absorbing one (i forget the scale, i just use regular!)

you only need to change them every 8 hours. risk of TSS is small if you comply to that.
there's no chance of anything else being absorbed by the tampon unless whatever may be absorbed goes INTO your vagina. you're not meant to be able to touch the cotton from the outside, thus you should get any unwanted moisture onto it.

i don't know what i'd do without tampons, i really don't.

Reply 27

I change it much more than every 8 hours.....it just feels a bit more hygenic to me.

Same reason for changing when you go to the loo.

Not necessarily absorbed by the tampon itself, but quite possibly by the string (unless you really want to hold the string every time you pee).

The reason that I mentioned the brand of tampons is that I find Tampax are really weird (to me, so no offence to those who use them), but Lil-Lets work well. Also, applicators aren't always easier!

Reply 29

The ones without applicators tend to be more messy on the fingers. Although, i found the ones without applicators easier to get in, because your finger acts as the applicator. Although, i can't wear either kinds, im hoping one day they will be some that dont make me itchy and uncomfortable.

Reply 30

Itchy and uncomdfortable - i mean they are a damn sight better than sitting in your own period....

i think something in them doesnt agree with me, nothing worse than an itch you cant scratch. Before anyone says ive probabily got thrush or something simular, im fine providing i dont use them. Oh and the itching goes within an hour of removing it, the longer i wear one the longer the itchy feeling remains.

Reply 32

Maybe your allergic to some of the materials in them.....weird.

Reply 33

thats what i though, not sure what goes into them. Though it was basically compressed cotton wool type stuff. Unless they treat them in something chemically.

You should only change it every time you go to the loo if you need to.

Changing it much more often than you need to (say, if there's still a lot of white when you change it) is not good for your vagina.

Doesn't changing the tampon every time you pee require more effort than holding the string every time you pee?

It might be the stuff that compresses the said cotton wool..

Not a problem when there's a range of different absorbencies, thus you can change as often as you need (4-8 hours is recommended).
Unless of course you go to the loo an abnormally large number of times throughout the day, in which case you might not change quite so often.

Aren't tampons (and cotton wool come to that) bleached? I'd say they are definitely chemically treated, that must be why you're reacting. How odd .

I could never ever go back to wearing Sanitary Towels. They make me physically sick.

If you drink 8 glasses of water a day as you're supposed to, you'll be going to the loo much more than every 4-8 hours. My flow is much too light to have a need to change every four hours, anyway.

If you want to change every time you go to the loo, fine... I'm only contesting someone's advice that you "should" do that... when there's no need whatsoever.
