general anaesthetic

i'm having a general anaesthetic next week for a minor operation, the consultant said i wouldn't be under for more than half an hour. i have had several in the past, but when i was very very young and i can't remember them at all.
i am a bit nervous about it, so i was just wondering if you guy have any tips or experiences to share, so i know what to expect.
thank you!!

I've been under general anaesthetic so many times. It's honestly fine though. The only bit i don't like is waking up.....you feel really groggy.

Just don't worry about it.
I'm sure that you're not allowed to eat anything for a while before you're given the anaesthetic (although some anaesthetists allow sips of water).
You may feel a bit nauseous afterwards, but this is fairly normal.

I had one a couple of years ago, had a few complications but wont list them all as I dont want you to worry unnecessarily. In general sometimes you can feel sick afterwards, when you wake up but there are plenty of different medications available they can give you to stop that.
Hope it all goes well, I am sure it will
i'm just going in to hospital for the day, does anyone know approx how long will it take for me to be well enough to go home after waking up? how long will it take until i feel back to normal?

It really is an individual thing, so we can't give much of an answer to that, sorry.

i was properly awake about 4 maybe 6 hours. Im not sure since time is wierd in hospital, plus the general kind makes you feel all cloudy headed, its nice though.

I find the strangest thing, is when its being administered, and you feel yourself slowly slipping unconcious... quite a cool experiance overall though
i was high afterwards and was talkin about how blue the sky was and that there were no clouds and was it sunny outside. all i wanted to do was eat, so i had a cheese sandwich about half an hour after i came round hehe. i got out about an hour or two after i came round but the girl next to me took ages to feel ok so it varies. i was under for about half an hour too.
me bro said he felt normal after, just like he'd been asleep for a while.

honestly i asked ma bro n he is a doctor. Try and ask the doc for a local one. they r much safer as general has more complications. i just had an operation a weekago and they saud general but i requesyed local and they said it was ok for local .
I imagine it feels a bit like dying might.

Don't worry about a thing!

Me too. I could feel myself going to sleep and trying not to let my eyes close, then blackness...and waking up 3 hours later.

My brother had one on Wednesday for longer than half and hour and was fine afterwards. I had one couple of years back and was also ok. As you've had them before, would indicate you don't have an adverse reaction to them so you should be absolutely fine. Hope it all goes well (i'm sure it will!)

for the op i'm having, local is definitely not suitable! i did actually ask the consultant and he said it definitely had to be general!
cheers guys this has been really helpful, not as worried now. i know 100s of people have them every day and i'm young fit and healthy etc. plus i've had a few before so i know i'm not allergic to them or anything!!!
please let me know if you have any more tips, or anything i should take to hospital with me etc.
thanks

A general is so weird, you feel yourself slipping under then the next thing you know you're opening your eyes and it feels like about 30 seconds have passed, not a few hours. Kind of cool actually!

Don't worry, you'll be fine, the risk are very low for young people in a good state of health.
take to hospital a few trashy magazines to read before the op to distract yourself

As long as you know how to count to ten, you'll be fine. Having said that, I only got up to six the first time I had it, the second I couldn't remember. :P

Waking up in recovery can either be very painful or just completely disorientating, depending on what's being done to you. If it's just a minor op your biggest worry is probably the dizziness, which is rather easy to control. First time I woke up in recovery I just fell asleep again, let the nurses deal with it all.

Seriously if your bloke don't do that...! Morning Glory!! lol!

Unless your idea of trashy magazine is different to mine of course...

GA is really good fun, i have had quite a few of them and they are like the best bit of the Op! So cool, all the ones i have had they have injected the stuff in your arm through an IV and it is like cold and you feel it going up your arm, through your heart and up to your brain, its soooo cool!

Waking up is a bit weird, but it just feels like you had a really good sleep, all refreshed and ready to go! Well, i am anyway!

lol. I was talking about magazines such as Heat (which is a very easy read)

Yeh...now this is going to sound very gay but Heat is a piss easy read (and pointless!), cosmo is full of sex...its like girls pornography, Red is Cosmo wannabe and Hello is just annoying.

Ok, thats my summary of girls magazines and what you get when you live with 7 girls for a year and have nothing else to read because you are too stingy or have already read this months Maxpower!!
