start it with a quote? thats not a very "personal" statement if you get what I mean. Just say you want to do law because its always fascinated you and has such far reaching effects on society as it influences the lives of everyone... no need for some cheesy quote which the admissions tutor probably hasn't heard before!

"Law shall always prevail" -- Benjamin Franklin.

NB: This is not a real quote, I just made it up.

LOL. We were told to use humour very lightly and preferably not at all but if I was an admissions tutor I would let you in for that quote alone.

I seem to remember reading that ages ago in Profesh's personal statement!

This thread is the exact reason why you shouldn't use quotes.

Although technically, Profesh's said: "The Law is the bedrock of a nation; it tells us who we are, what we value, who has power, and who hasn't. Almost nothing has more impact on our lives,"

Laws are like sausages. It's better not to see them being made.- Bismarck :p:

I would avoid quotes.
Please, DO NOT use quotes- especially to start the piece. The way Profesh does it is okay i suppose, but to put a quote at the beginning is, according to King's College lecturers, and the admissions tutor's at Oxford, very cheesy. I went to an Oxbridge day when i was considering going there last year, and the admissions guy said that hundreds of people start with a quote, and they find it eye-rolling. He said some of them are so cheesy that they even laugh out loud.

Just try to be innovative, clever, and funny, and you'll be fine. I have to say, my personal statemnet couldn't be further from Profesh's, and i got my offers fine. Didn't use any big words, was plain and honest, and it really showed my passion for learning Law. Don't start with a quote.

Hey,
I'm in need of a good, or fairly brilliant, law quote. This is because I am wanting to start my personal statement with a quote of some sort. I haven't been able to come across any decent ones that I can stem my writing from, so far. I'm maybe looking for one that shows that the law effects us all/whole of society etc..
Anyone know of any decent ones?
Thanks.

I started my PS with a quotation, too:

Scire leges non hoc est verba earum tenere, sed vim ac potestatem

it's from a Roman quaestor who reformed the Roman law

yeh i'm thinking i may change the start of my personal statement lol my ananlogy was everyone always says dont start with a quote becuase everyone does, so if everyone else hears this and changes theirs i can leave mine because not everyone will have a quote lol.

how about a little quote in my concluding paragragh?

How about putting "I lack original thought"? A personal statement isn't an academic essay. Quotes have their place, PSs aren't one of them.
Provided it's a good quote and relevant to your conclusion, that might be OK.
