'National Identity' on the UCAS form...?!

Hi,

In the 'aboutyou' section of the online UCAS application form, one of the compulsory questions is your 'national identity'.

The guidance makes clear that this is different from one's ethnic origin (white, black, asian, etc)... instead it is asking if you call yourself 'British' or something else such as 'English', 'Welsh', 'Irish', etc.

I'm a bit confused... in other forms I've always said I'm 'British' (because I hold a British passport), but now I think about it I suppose I'm 'English' because I've always lived in England, like England and wouldn't really want to live elsewhere in the UK (no offence!). And I've never even visited Scotland!

However, is it really worth putting 'English' down on my form, when it's never crossed my mind before, and will it make me look like some kind of fussy and boring nationalist?!

I know this might seem a silly question, but UCAS is starting to make me paranoid!

i put english i think....i don't see the point of it really whether you consider yourself english or british...its hardly like a uni will reject you for being nationalist (watch out if your applying to welsh/irish/scottish unis though! )...toss a coin to decide.

'Nationalist'... seeing it written down makes it look like an aggressive word, don't you think?!

Anyway, my point is it just seems *logical* to say English (due to the reasons outlined above), although I suppose British is the more official title.

Any other comments?
Hmm, I just checked my UCAS form via Track, out of curiosity, and next to 'National Identity', it just says 'UK National'
mine says 'other'. i really dont think it matters what you put down tbh
edit: no mines uk national. ethnicity is other

true. just checked mines 'uk national' as well, wonder if british/english/uk national were all options, i swear i remember some question where i had to decide between british and english.

Or maybe they just change everyone's to UK national after submission?!

See what I mean about UCAS making me paranoid

Is there something wrong with English nationalism?
Well, try asking the Scottish/Welsh/Irish...

Seriously of course, universities aren't going to discriminate based on nationality, it is indeed just UCAS-induced paranoia (as opposed to the rather more common UCAS-induced blind rage... ). However, as an English student, I did get rejected from a Scottish university...
I don't see British as a Nationality, more the term for the people within the Union of Great Britain.

I always tick English.
