Are they interchangeable? If you have management skills then do you have the skills to be a director?

    I think a director's more senior.

A director (of a limited company or plc) has a number of very onerous legal responsibilities (and liabilities). A manager does not.

A director is higher up the ladder than a manager. A lot of a director's work will be based on management skills (they set the strategic direction of the company) but as mentioned by another poster they have numerous legal obligations too, mostly set out in the Companies Act.

Some companies will use the titles of "manager" and "director" differently to others but legally it's a different matter.

It is as the others said. In simple terms:

If a manager stuffs up and it affects the company, they could get the sack.

If a director stuffs up, or is found responsible for allowing the manager to stuff up, and the company is affected, they could possibly get sued and/or face criminal proceedings.
