Imperial: the most expensive university in the country?

Did anyone catch the student finance guide in the Guardian today (I usually don't pick up leftist rags but this one was on the tube as I was waiting so started reading it)? They counted up Imperial is the most expensive university in the country. £4,608/year compared to the cheapest of £1,040/year at Teeside.

What really annoyed me is the VP of the union talking to the Guardian saying, and I quote: "Many of our students have to work during term time to support themselves, with a detrimental effect on studies....When you first come to university and discover that your first term's loan doesn't even cover your rent, you realise that things are not going to be plain sailing"

What the **** is this guy talking about? I hardly knew anyone who was working part time to support themselves and its been expensive, yes, but only when people want to piss away their money by constantly getting hammered and going on shopping sprees. To any would be fresher who read this: he's talking *******s, its not as bad as he makes it out to be, with careful expenditure and budgeting, you can get yourself through it. Keep the faith. Respect.

yeah, i have no idea what he's talking bout either!!

in 1st year i didn't know anyone who had part time jobs. this year people have jobs just as a supplement, not cos they absolutely have to!

maybe the figures also come from the fact that there are lot of rich kids who come to imperial, and they obviously spend more money on clubbing/food/drink/clothes than is necessary!

although, i was so shocked when my friend in lancaster told me she spends £40 a week on rent!! hmph!

Speaking to the Guardian already. Oh dear. And as well as it being *******s, working for less than 16 hours is actively encouraged by the Higher Education Minister himself as it gives students experience in a working environment which employers often value after graduation.

It is encouraged, but the advice is targetted at the "average student", Imperial's workload is a fair bit above the average. Personally, I think any part time work above 5 hours is going to be counter productive for an Imperial student, and 5 hours will earn you *******s not to mention noone will employ for such short hours. I think the majority of Imperial students realise that, hence what that VP guy was talking about holds very little truth, if any.

I wouldn't go that far. Some Imperial students tend to like studying during their spare time as opposed to doing anything else! I spent well over 20 hours a week during extracurricular stuff which I could've spent earning money if I wanted, and I still managed to get good marks - and I was a final BSc year.

As long as people manage their time well, there's certainly room for 16 hours a week of paid employment; it's not necessary though providing you budget well.

All the sabbs are 'Deputy Presidents' at Imperial (bar the Felix Editor (who will be much better next year), President and Medic President). At other unions you get Treasurer, Vice Pres etc. but I think ICU likes to give its sabbs extra CV fodder.

This thread is not talking about costs in terms of fees, those fees are fairly representative of medicine courses in the UK, especially at top universities. We're talking about living costs (accomodation, food, leisure etc).

Apart from rent, which is by far the biggest expense, I don't think living costs are really that much higher than anywhere else in the south-east...

Ah k, sorry, I have a tendency to just react on thread titles and not read posts.

Living costs won't be much different. As the OP said, any potential applicants should not be dettered by such rumours.

Thanks again to the ****ing ****** who neg repped me for my comments. No, I don't get bankrolled by my parents either but I know how to prioritise my expenditure and see my way through university. You, whoever you are, obviously are a ****ing failure and like to blame the system rather than your inability to budget and make sense of the importance of money.

I disagree. I don't study at Imperial but I went to a tough university and worked 10 hours a week, plus extracurricular activities.

I think students in general are deterred somewhat by London in general. If you dont mind studying at a London uni, i doubt that article will put you off studying at Imperial in particular.

I would say that you learn a lot simply by virtue of living for 3/4 years in Britain's magnificient capital

I just love London, wouldn't change a thing. I love it at Imperial.

To be honest I am a little worried about the cost of going to "the most expensive Uni in the country"

Im working all summer to try and get a bit of cash together for my first year. And I might well try and get a job when im there too. Granted i could probably get through without working but one of the main reasons I chose London was because I thought it woud be a fun place to live. If I dont have the money to go out I may aswell be living somewhere boring but cheap

I think you've missed the point that people on this forum are trying to make. It really isn't as expensive as you might think, but only if you're careful. I usually go out to enjoy a few drinks with friends a couple of times a week. We usually go to the City which is quite expensive but then it depends on what kind of taste you have in alcohol (cognac: v. expensive, beer: not too bad) and what kind of place you like "chilling" in. Clubbing can be expensive but I'm not much of a clubber so I don't really know, but I certainly knew quite a few peolpe who went clubbing regularly and didn't seem to do too badly. If you're working all summer I'm sure you'll be able to get together about 2K and you can add another 2K from loans/grants for the 1st term alone, believe me you don't need 4K to get through 1 term, even if you like going out regularly.

Yeh, I understand that you can have a good time on just loans and grants. Im not complaining as such, i knew Imperial would be expensive. I just think i should try and get the whole 'London' experience in the first year. Im looking forward so much to having indie clubs and decent gigs everyweek, all just a tube ride away. Where I live now is just so lacking in those respects. Im hoping to raise maybe 1-2k. Ive got £800 already (but I'm blowing most of that on festivals actually :p: ) its not like im going to work myself that hard for it, i just dont want to be in a situation where i could be having loads of fun but money problems stop me.

Lol, having lots fun in London is all well and good, but remember you also have quite a hefty degree to study for. A lot of people forget that and subsequently end up failing a unit or 2 or even the whole year. You'll never run out of things to do in London, especially living in Central, time management and prioritising is the key. Personally, I found so much to do around the university, I actually didn't go much around London apart from regular drinks in the City with friends.
