my advice to u:
smile more, try to surround yourself with those u love, and those who also love u, put yourself in a good atmosphere, soak up the love, appreciate it fully. and before long, your heart will just have no reason to have the pessimistic look on things if u get me?!

keep your chin up .. and remember

Recently I have started to scare myself that I am some sort of freak as emotions I used to feel, don’t affect me anymore. I used to be a compassionate, sympathetic and empathetic person and now I would say I have lost those qualities gradually.
Is there anything I can do to make myself a nicer person again?

Yeah, I hate everyone too. Well, I just hate idiots, which is pretty much everyone, and I feel no sympathy when they get in crappy situations, like face plant into moving cars or something.

Thanks for the info everyone. I really didn’t think I can be depressed as I do genuinely feel ok. So I don’t really know why I have stopped feeling things such as sympathy to the extent I did before, for example someone I know died recently and although I felt upset I didn’t feel as upset as I should do. So I don’t really understand, unless stuff that happened to me when I was younger has started to affect me now and made me a less empathetic person

Depression and sadness are not the same thing - that's the first thing to realise. You can be depressed and happy.

The same thing happened to me last year. I just wasn't bothered about anything at all. My emotions came back though, so that's something. Maybe you just have to go with the flow and they'll come back?

I don't see why not feeling emotions is such a bad thing

I've gone through the same sort of thing... I still HAVE emotions, I'm not some kind of cyborg, but I'm not as sympathetic, empathetic, caring, compasionate, etc.. as I used to be.
But I've put it down to life experience, now that I'm a bit older and I've experienced things like death, heartbreak and so on and realised that I don't need to be nice to people all the time, as people in general aren't very nice. I'm probably just more cynical, I gues it just happens as you get older.
Also I think things like TV, newspapers and such make us feel like our lives should be a hugely moving, emotional expierience ALL the time, when really it isn't, usually it's just sorta... normal.
Why don't you watch some sad films see if you still cry at the end? Might make you feel a bit "nicer" again.

Depression is not sadness.

Try clicking the link I bothered to find for you.

Thanks I did read, its just that to me I always thought depression=sadness as simple as. But I understand its a more complicated thing now.
So I guess as suggested optimism is the way forward then hopefully I should start being more understanding of others, like I was before.
