What is the point in doing a PhD in any subject?!
This is a bit of a silly question, but let me think...
-Better job prospects
-A further understanding of certain aspects of optometry
-More experience
-Involvement in research
-Chance to work with the top optometrists/other health professionals

Research and teaching primarily.
Medical science always needs to be improved, and new students always need to be taught.
