Finally another male gees.

I just had a look round the campus actually because we were in the area and it's a really nice campus. Was a bit weird for me having been out of education since June but good fun.

It's a shame that I couldn't see the social sciences building in the time I had but I couldn't find it, nor Cryfields but I did see Bluebells which looked awesome

Bluebells is one of my aims but I'm gonna be tight throughout the year if so.

I'd apply for Bluebells but I'd have absolutely no money for fresher's as well as food and money for social stuff :frown: It looks very nice but I figured cheaper accommodation means less keeping me in my room and socialising/using campus facilities though.

Agree with you there, defo going for an en suite, but may not be bluebells. If so, then I'm going to probably get an extra £2000 or £3k from my parents in that matter.

Just a thought, this is a weird question. When we actually go to the uni and start, will they expect us to have textbooks, do they give a list on that stuff before or when we actually start?

Hi, I'm a first year Sociology student and the only two books I have found were necessary to buy are Gang Leader for a Day by Sudir Venkatesh and Social Research Methods by Alan Bryman.
Of course, module structures may change next year and Gang Leader for a Day may not be necessary (still a nice easy read though). Social Research Methods has been extremely useful and I imagine I will continue to use it throughout my degree. I know some post-grads who still refer to it so it's a good investment. There are copies in the library so it isn't essential but I have definitely benefited from having my own copy.

Hi, I've firmed Warwick to study History and Sociology so I will be taking only two modules (sociological perspectives and researching society and culture). I haven't studied sociology before, so I was just wondering how difficult do you think it will be for me compared to other students that have taken sociology at Alevel for example.
Just to finish off, how difficult has it been for you, and any tips?
good luck in your exams

Hey!
I thought I would start this thread so I could talk to some fellow offer holder for Sociology. Also, who is actually planing to accept the offer from Warwick?

Hey guys, i've just firmed sociology at Warwick too  nice meet you all haha
Hi all, I'm just about to go into yr 2 sociology at Warwick, and can honestly say that it's great, although it does depend on who is your tutor.

As for social research methods, you're in for a treat! taught by a great guy who is ready to chat at anytime, and answers emails almost before you've refreshed your inbox, as for books, Venketesh is a good read, (even if it's not studied next year) and the Bryman book is invaluable. I'd also recommend getting a dictionary of sociology, can't be used as a reference, but great for a short recap of concepts and figures of note. Don't worry about joining without prior study, I went in 11 years after finishing school and found it ok!

Some advice...... Make friends with your seminar group, talk to everyone (especially tutors), don't avoid your round at the bar, DO THE READINGS EVERY WEEK, take notes and ask around if you need any help!
I've firmed Warwick for politics and sociology. I'm a bit scared I won't make the grades though, does anyone know if they let you in with like a grade lower?

I'm worried that I won't make the grades either >.> I've heard that they consider your whole application, in particular your personal statement if you don't get the best of grades. I think I will just miss the grade too and if that does turn out to be the case I'm hoping they will consider me especially since there were no January exams too. Sorry that doesn't help with your question much and sorry about my rambling on like that. It makes me feel a little better to know that somebody else is kinda in that position of where they don think they will do well either. Also when I went to one of the open days a lecturer had said that getting an ABB is difficult so perhaps they wouldn't mind you getting a grade lower.

Really, we had a class divided between both genders here. Our teacher was surprised that many chose it (as in boys). Oh well. See you there hopefully !
I'm currently at the uni in my first year, but I'm changing to sociology next year so I'll be with you guys!
I just sent my application for accommodation and that's everything sorted for me. Personally I don't really remember much about the subject after a year off so I'll be learning it all again :P I put Cryfields as my first choice since I'd rather have more money for food and things so if anyone here wants to join me feel free lol
I live in Cryfield at the moment and I love it ^^ Although I'll be living off campus next year.
