Basically my housing group split up, so rather than stay as a senior resident (too far, up a hill which doesn't do wonders for my bad knees) I was planning on finding a single room somewhere - then if I could find somewhere close to lectures and with good heating ideally.
However someone I know a little offered to let me join his group - don't know any of them. I'm rather quiet and don't like to go out much and it would be 4 guys and me.

I would just go in the cheapest/closest one if you felt the same about the people in each house. If you don't feel comfortable in ether than go alone. It's really how you feel. You don't want to be uncomfortable in your own home.

There still is time to find another house share, it's still early days and even now there are people advertising for rooms for the current academic year! I wouldn't go with the guys, I'd wait it out and look for another house share (and look online too!) and if I didn't find something satisfactory then I'd go it alone!
