# Remainder Theorem watch

1. Can someone help me with this question please

The remainder obtained when is divided by is twice the remainder when the same expression is divided by . Find the value of d.

So using the remainder theorem (x-1) would be 1. So subbing 1 in I got
2+d.
For (x+1) it was -1. So I subbed that in and got 10-d.

Since it said (x+1) was twice as much I assumed that it would be.
2(2+d)=10-d
so 4+2d=10-d
3d=6
d=2.
The answer in the book is -18. So I have messed up quite a bit. Any help would be much appreciated
2. When is divided by (x+1) u sub in -1 and you get 10+d not 10-d. So that's what ur first mistake is and ur second mistake is its saying 2+d which you got is twice the other remainder so ur equations should be not 2(2+d) but (2+d)/2=the remainder when divided by (x+1). Remember one is twice the other divide that one by 2 to make it equal to other one..

Ah damn it! Got it now. Thank you
