My girlfriend, Linda, recently expressed some worries to me about her career opportunities if she were to do a philosophy degree (She is planning to go to Warwick btw). As she is in Oxford revision courses right now I decided to ask on her behalf. Does anyone know what jobs would be available for someone holding a degree in philosophy?

Civil Service (any area almost)
Journalism
Law (phil is good prep)
Academia
Marketing
Media
Teaching
Business (financial etc.)

Philosophy is just like any arts degree (such as History) in that, although it does not give you specific skills so you could not become a doctor you can go into masses of careers! Around 60% of graduate jobs don't require a specific degree.

heh, I'm going to Warwick to do Philosophy (well, PPE).

Philosophy does tend to be looked down on slightly because of its seeming irrelevance and dreamyness, and obviously it doesn't specifically prepare you for any other career apart from academic.

That said, if you've gone to a v. good uni like Warwick then it leaves all the non degree-specific careers (50% of all graduate jobs don't specify a particular degree) like law, journalism, civil service, whatever really, open to you just as much as doing a degree in history or english would, for example.

lol, I still don't know where I'm going for definite!

Think I told you that before I got my Warwick offer. Gotta decide by the 28th April. Longer I leave it undecided the longer I can participate in threads on both unis.

It depends how senior you want to be.

Being a mason also helps if you want to get very high up.

Can someone give me info on the police salaries at the different levels and the normal time it takes to progress to such levels. Thanks.
When i say senior i mean above sargent(sp)... so inspector, chief inspector etc...

inspector is about 30k.

usually it depends how well you do in the tests when you start... my dad past with nearly perfect scores and was offered accelerated promotion... normally its quite slow though.

A few years ago something like 90% of Chief Constables were found to be masons.

I don't know if they've managed to stamp it out now.

I wondered that, and they didn't charge anything so it can't have been profitable.

With a Philosophy degree she should have no problems carving out a career in:

McDonalds
Burger King
KFC
Starburger
Pizza Hut
