barbell isnt that necessary, you can work around it, and i dont like those weights with the semented sand (anyone know what it actually is?) in it, these ones are better

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3008243.htm should be pefect for you, dont bother with barbell, especially if you are just starting out and working on chest and arms.

I've got the second one, willing to sell depending on postage charges?

When I first started out I found those (2nd link) fine. It wasn't until I wanted to step it up, which is when I spent about £80 on another set.

Probaly wont go for the barbell, plus the postage will be pretty expensive i imagine. Thanks for the offer though.

well if you see something better and it has a barbell, no reason not to go for it, its just that one of the main benefits is for benching, but

1- you have nothing to rest it on, can be dangerous if you are just starting out
2- the weights arent strong enough really
3- you can do some flys and other techniques instead

its also good for lower back, which is harder to do with dumbells, but its quite dangerous if you dont do the proper technique, so if you are just starting out, or not looking to improve on it, i would not risk it.

Im sure there are other benefits of using a barbell, but quite hard to do without having the support equipment, and others can be replicated with dumbells so up to you really

So you think these:

are the best weights available for the price? Also will 20kg be big enough? Im not too strong but in terms of weight im not sure what i can lift, i basically want to get the most out of the weights before i have to buy bigger ones.
Reply 11
20kg is big enough, trust me, I tried to lift my bro's and lets just say its not light..........:P

for about 4-6 months 20kg should be enough for most exercises for a beginner
This is what I went for nearly a year ago.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3025367.htm

I was a newbie just like you and wanted to start weight lifting as I had time to kill after all the revisions and homeworks at A level. I went out and bought the above weights which together weigh more than the heaviest ones in your link.

I started out with the lower weights and dumb bells a year ago and have now progressed onto more advanced stuff with barbells e.g. bench press, preacher curls, etc and the good thing is I did not have to buy any new weights or barbells as I started doing more advanced stuff, saving me money.
Plus having a go at lifting a higher weight than what I can lift always inspires me to go for my maximum. Sorry for the elaborate response but just trying to help:biggrin: *breathes and vanishes*

Thanks for that reply. I think i will just go for dumb bells as i dont have enough room to keep barbells.

Don't buy them from argos! Bloody hell.

I agree, these are the ones i have at home, the weight goes from very light to nice and heavy depending on wot u want. I would also recomend going to the gym aswel, i only really use my home free weights the odd occasion (like the gym is closed etc).
