Depends who you want to get back with and how you broke up.

Was it a long-term girlfriend or a quick fling with someone? Did you or she break things off? Was it on good terms, bad terms, or you just drifted apart?

are you desperate for getting that someone back?

Hmz that's a tricky one. You could wait a couple of months before letting them know you're interested, but by then it could be too late and then you'd wish you'd said something sooner.

I think you should start by being a little bit flirty and friendly but not too OTT. If they respond by flirting back then be a little bit less subtle about it and whilst they keep responding in a flirtatious manner keep going, increasing the flirtation each time you're together. Eventually it'll become obvious that you want to get back together, and by then hopefully they'll want you back too. If they respond by running away then i'd just give it some space and time and try again later if you still want to.

Im female which makes it harder as its the guy that normally makes the moves. We broke up as he said he didn't think I was really serious but I just had a few problems, I really want to avoid sounding desperate as that will put him off, he is the type of guy who doesn't have many girlfriends and is more interested in his work so I can't see him finding someone else too soon. Will waiting a few months make me seem less desperate? Or will it not make much diference.

I think if you wait ages it'll just seem like you're not serious which is exactly what you don't want him to think!
If you still talk to him bring it up casually, "hey you know that thing you borrowed? cos someone else wanted to borrow it, do you think you still have it?" If you aren't talking I don't really know what yu should do
Seduce him, have unprotected sex with him, get pregnant, have the baby- that should do the trick.
maybe write him a letter telling him how you feel if you can't put into words.

I agree with the letter idea. Hella Pride & Prejudice, it worked for Mr. Darcy!
