You need introduction into the history of china about the rule of Mao Zedong and Deng Xioping. These are the two individuals that made these issues happen Mao is to Extreme communism while Deng is to Opening up and neo communism. Google and read more.
But who said China has ever practiced capitalism ??? I dont think so. China is operating the socialist Market system which is a hybrid of Extreme Communism and Capitalism

So your answers will depend on your conviction.
Communism has helped china to dictate its pace of development towards the market system. It facilitated orderliness and pace control as all variables were under the government's control

Communism did not help capitalism because capitalism is a new system that the leaders were not ready to embrace (fear of unknown). History had it that China has decided to differentiate itself from the practices of the west and were not ready to follow suit.
Communism cannot be easilty uprooted from a system and what made it more complex was that chinese had come to accept communism as a culture and you can imagine how long it should take to change the norms of the people.
The Governance systems also abet communism
