Body Fat- Abs

Mornin folks,

Just went to the gym for the first time last night (too costly previously) with the intention of getting fitter and increasing muscle size like pretty much every dude my age (18, that is). Anyway, i was beng measured (heart rate, height, weight) and found out my body fat was 5%. I was kind of shocked at this because i had previously thought 10-15% was considered athletic. Although the guy reassured me by saying that he himself was 7%, he did mention something about if i missed a meal, catabolism might occur. Which is quite concerning.

Also, if my body fat is that low, surely my abs will be visible? Alas, they are not. I will probably ask the gym instructor tommorrow but does that mean i need to do more cardio to make my abs visible or more crunches( and other ab exercises) to define them?

That would help, if not a full body pic. How was your body fat measured?

How would a body picture help? To prove that i am 5% bodyfat?

well the guy measured my height (5"10) and my weight (9.5 stone) and then he got this sort of game controller pad for me to hold which gave me the reading.

Because with your height and weight, it doesnt really sound right.
Reply 10
and 5% doesnt sound very right
Reply 11
it is super low tho. apparently its dangerous to go anythin under 5%

Yeh, my friend was 3% and he was anorexic.

I am honestly 5% body fat (there's no reason why i would lie) and the guy has written it down so i definitely did not mishear him.

If you really want a photo i'll try and upload one with photobucket but my bkluetooth is playing up at the mo.

Sounds like he/you used electrical impedence to measure body fat. This is 1 method - but isn't the most accurate of methods of measuring body fat %age. The most accurate readily available method is to measure skin folds although this isn't easy as you need someone who knows what they're doing. Alternatively there is a method used by the US military:

http://www.he.net/~zone/prothd2.html

which just uses measurements of height and waist and neck circumference. This is about as accurate as the electrical method you used. Try it and see what it comes up with, if its wildly different to 5% then maybe you aren't 5% bodyfat, if it comes up with a number close to 5% then you probably are....

We're not saying you're lying, it's just that not a lot of people ARE 5% bodyfat (18 year olds), unless you are a serious athlete.

and it was their first time in a gym with the intention of getting fitter

It wasn't that i was overweight or fat for that matter. I do lots of football(about 1 hour plus a day) and felt that i needed to go the gym to increase stamina for the new season and add a bit of muscle.

Just went on that website davey boy and it said my body fat was 9% but i don't think it can give you an accurate reading because it doesn't really take into account muscle, it just averages it out
wow, last time i measured mine i was 15% (last year) and i was told that is very good!:frown: i go to the gym 3 times a week for 3 years now ! then again u r only like 9.5 stone.
