Sources:
As the ruling group in Moscow grew older and more inflexible there were by 1980's signs that they faced (grave) economic and political problems. - James Joll Europe since 1870

Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Regan (refused) to compromise with Moscow and (recognised) that the USSR were not just another great power, but a genuinely evil empire. - Peter Hitchins The Mail on Sunday

By the winter of 1989...it was clear that the party was fighting a losing battle to retain it's place as the political authority in the system. Glasnost and losing the elections had resulted in it's losing control of the two key resources: authority and it's undisputed control of the media. - Soviet Politics 1917-1991
