ok so i understand how an action potential is produced but i do not understand the point of it? is an action potential nerve impulses which then travel along the axon and then are passed onto other neurones in order to produce a response?

Simply put yes, it also has other uses e.g. in the AQA spec we learn about it's role in muscle contraction

Yup kind of nerve impulses that acts like charges in the body providing energy to a neurone to pass an impulse
