A Health Check?

Hey all,
I'm totally paranoid about my health, I always think I have all deseases that exist (all of the ones I've heard of and more) including cancer of every single organ and STDs (having never had sexual contact of any kind with anyone - see how paranoid I am??). So, I was wondering, would it be possible to turn up at a hospital and ask for a *free* health check (I'm 18 does it matter?)? As in to go for all the scans and visit all doctors. I had this done when I was 13 (a school requirement) and it felt so good when every doctor gave me an all clear.

I don't think you can just turn up to a hospital and asked to get checked (maybe you can privately i'm really not sure!) but what I did (as i'm equally paranoid ) is go to my GP and tell her about it. She then gave me one of those blood test forms and ticked every single box so i was checked for a load of things (diabetes, WBC count, cholesterol etc etc). Maybe try that, or do u want a more extensive check up?
Yeah I might do that, thanks! And a visit to a dentist and a woman's health doctor are said to be needed every 6 months, so I can do them can't I?
read this:

if you find that any of it is true... you may want to see your doctor about it.

being excessively paranoid about your health can be a VERY SERIOUS problem... and the good thing is you CAN get help for it.
please see your doctor.

yep! i just don't think u can turn up at a hospital on your own accord (unless A & E!), only by GP referral. Good luck! I thought i had every disease under the sun - my blood test showed my levels of everything were just fine
^ I was really scared at first when I opened the page because I thought that anon1 was being funny and showing me more desease which I could the "find " in myself

I think it started when someone really close to me died of cancer and I realised that absolutely anyone can have this kind of thing, no matter how young or a good person. On the other hand, I know that if I have a check up I will be fine and stop worrying, so I guess it's not that bad.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It's exactly the same with me, but with heart disease. That's why i was so anxious check my cholesterol levels. Explain all of this to your GP, they are very understanding and should hopefully get you in for a blood test in no time.

hypochondria is a REAL medical problem.... if all these fears are really affecting your life or disturbing, and you want to put a stop to it, you must tell your doctor about this problem. He/she can help you get over it (the treatment doesn't necessarily have to be with medication)

getting a check-up will not put a stop to your problem... you could even get addicted to check-ups

This is true ^ explain to your GP exactly how you're feeling and how worried you become over your health. They'll be the best person to decide what course of action to take from there and whether it is hypochondria or not.

Maybe you are watching to much hospital dramas... Seriously though if everyone could just walk in from the street and request as many tests and scans as they wish NHS would have to pack up staight away. You can have health check with BUPA for example but that costs in the line of 200 pounds. Total waste of money, in your case.

What you realy need is to talk with your GP. They should ressure you that there is nothing wrong with you and to be honest I doubt if they even send you for some simple blood tests unless you have some symptoms.

There is definitely a good idea to visit dentist regularly. As to women's health you are not sexualy active and you are to young for regular cerival smears so I see no point unless there are some specific symptoms you are worried about.

Hmm.
Oh, turns out being scared of being ill is probably the only desease I have
I thought everyone was like that all the time. Just to say, I don't actually imagine symptoms or anything, I always imagine the desease that aren't obvious that's why I'm worried - if I had them, I wouldn't know.

It is actually a revelation because if all of you don't worry about it [much] then there's probably nothing to worry about. I'm 18, I don't smoke, don't dring, don't do drugs, am not sexually active, no bad family health history (none of these are the result of this paranoia, I have my reasons)- so I probably am fine.

I'm going for a blood test next week. Thanks again!
