I'm currently in Year 11, and I'm struggling to decide which A levels I want to do. I know I definitely want to do Philosophy and Ethics, History, Psychology, and English. My sixth form only offers English Lit/Lang and English Lit, which would you suggest is better? I'm predicted A/A* in Language at GCSE, and an A in Literature, but I prefer Literature more. However people have said that doing English Lit along with my other subjects will create a massive workload, so I'm stuck between the two. Which would you recommend is best, and how do they both differ from GCSE? I'm also thinking of going into a career of primary teaching, so are my other A Levels good choices for this?

Thank you

In my own experience, English Literature is more highly respected than English Lit/Lang. It's seen as more academic by many people. Also, however this is just my opinion, it's much more interesting!

I take Lit/Lang and I really like it I picked it because I couldn't decide between Language or Literature.

If you feel more passionately towards Literature then I'd day pick that but if you're interested in the Language side as well then pick Lit/Lang.

This whole Lit/Lang thing not being as respected is nonsense, I don't really understand why people always say that. Especially when top Universities offer degrees in 'English Language and Literature', so it's obviously be an advantage to do both.

Cambridge being one of the most prestigious Universities accept English Language and Literature as an English A Level to do English http://www.study.cam.ac.uk/undergrad...urses/english/

Only if English Lit. isn't offered by your school:

"It is essential that applicants should have English Literature as one of their A Level (or equivalent) subjects. Where straight English Literature is not offered at an applicant's school/college, the combined English Language and Literature A Level is acceptable."

English Language is seen as useful for some courses though, e.g. Linguistics: http://www.study.cam.ac.uk/undergrad...s/linguistics/

That's just Cambridge being fussy, oddly I'm pretty sure someone from my college got an offer from Cambridge with Lit/Lang so I don't quite know how they swung that one as Lit is offered at my college as well

The majority of other top Universities for English accept it, such as Bristol, UCL and King's College London
