Guys, no one has really given me any real advice here yet!

What excercises (and how often a week should I do them) would you suggest for a novice, wanting to improve pecs and arms? Thanks a lot

just do them all, at around 12 kilos and 15 reps and build the weight up gradually, do them all and you'll target them eventually:smile: but seriously most of the weights target where you want to target apart from the leg weights of course

do you think i can manage to lift the knives? would you help me? I can make sandwiches- what's your fave master?

Nice, Titanium  Thanks for the advice. So just try and do most of the machines at 15 reps and whatever weights they suggest. How many times a week should I go? Is it too much to go 5 times (that's what I do for aerobic)?

If you trying to gain muscle, go slightly lower reps, say under 10 (thou you can mix in some higher rep stuff aswell) and do it say 3 times a week. Any more and you will not have time to recover properly.

oh but that's boring, the weights are the best bit!

Brilliant. Thanks for the advice, titanium. Last question: Will doing weights help with overall body fat percentage? I.e. will i get away with doing less aerobic stuff?

Yes, it does burn calories as it is physical work, though i do reccomend you also do cardio.

the simplified answer would be yes.

Reply 35

heavy lifting burns more calories post workout as your metabolism is higher and lasts longer

Depends how heavy the weights are, if you are not constantly hurting then no it probably isnt. You say you do 45 reps, thats quite high, so 5 times a week should be ok if you doing low intensity.

yes you will die

Reply 39

What ever you do, don't do less than 20 reps of a lightweight, otherwise you will go to bed and wake up the next day bigger than arnold schwarzanegger!!

Absolute b*ll*cks. High reps on light weigts is more for toning, low reps on high weights (6-12) will build mass. Start with low reps/high weights initially until you have got some mass that your happy with, then start doing high reps/low weights if you want to bring some more definition in (6-8 months +)

What excercises (and how often a week should I do them) would you suggest for a novice, wanting to improve pecs and arms?

Pecs: Bench press-Overall Chest
Incline Press-Upper Chest
Decline Press-Lower chest

Dumbell presses/Incline Presses
Seated Dip is quite good for isolation of the chest
Dumbell Flyes

Arms (biceps, triceps and forearms)

Standing dumbell curls-General biceps work!
Preacher curl machine or free bar
Hammer curls
Concentration curls
Seated Row

Tricep kickbacks
Overhead extension (sorry don't know the real name for this! its where you sit and theres a bar that goes over your head that you pull down almost in a crunch motion)

Seated Barbell curls
Reverse barbel curls-both for forearms! you can use dumbells as well

Sorry for the long post, but it would be longer if I explained  you can find good diagrams and videos on www.bodybuilding.com

eventually it will as the new muscle will place a higher metabolic demand on your body
