Birmingham Uni Assassins Guild

I was playing a game called "The Ship" today, and made me remember somthing I heard about a game thats played at Cambridge Uni.

Its called Assassins, and basically you give every player a target, in which they have to kill by various means. But at the same time as your hunting someone, someone else is trying to kill you. Its made more interesting, as you dont actually know your target, but you get certain details about them, so you actually have to find out who they are first. The whole idea is that its not a sort of society where everyone goes out drinking all the time etc. but one in which you have to try and track people down, using your ingenuity. And as your doing this, you also would have to be aware of whats around you, as you could be targeted any time.

Obviously, you dont actually KILL them, but instead, you can use somthing like a rubber band gun, a carboard axe or even, if your really inventive, drop a huge block of polystyrene on top of them from a two story window with the words "Fridge/Freezer" on it. Some people even go as far as "poisoning" drinks (labeling the bottom), or rigging up bombs using an alarm clock, which goes off attached to a bottle of water, which is the "explosive"

And then, when you "kill" them, you get a new target, i.e. the Person that they were supposed to assassinate themselves, but obviously they couldnt.

Variations on the main rules allow for higher point scores for more ingenious assissination methods, such as hitting someone over the head with a "mallet" getting 2 points, but rigging up a trap outside thier door in the middle of the night, giving you 20 points for example. This breeds more competition to find even more ingeneous methods of assasinating someone.

Its just somthing exciting, and different than most society's out there, and really lets your imagination run wild, especially from the stories i've heard. And you could then start posting

There actually used to be one run at birmingham a few years ago, but I dont think its in service anymore http://uk.geocities.com/the_boff99/, so I was wondering if anyone thought it was interesting enough to try and start it up again in september?

Theres a lot of different rules on the subject, that can be read at places such as http://www.srcf.ucam.org/assassins/
http://www.dur.ac.uk/assassins.society/rules.php

So, good idea or not?

Good news - If there was a society in existence in before then you automatically go through the guild channels and get recognised without all the crap I had to do for my Pirate soc!

Though please note - Assassins could also be termed... ninjas? Pirates don't like ninjas... prepare for a plunderin'!

My housemates were all talking about this the other day, I'll have to let them know that someone else is interested, I'm sure they'd be well up for setting something up

Reply 7

I take it that means your already at B'ham then? Would be fun to get a lot of people interested in it

Reply 8

Yep id b up for it too...sounds cool

Haha, that sounds like a brilliant idea and a whole lot of fun. It does sound like something that I wouls be rubbish at personally but if there was one running I would definitely be wanting to keep an eye on it. This sounds like the epitome of 'student' to me.

Hey sounds cool, im already at brum and know a few people that'd be interested! Anything formal organised with the guild already, or has it not got that far yet? (does it have to be anything to do with the guild? they seem to have so much paper work, i can see the health and safety forms now...)

Well it can very easily be run outside the guild, as all you need is a database of names, and a couple of people to collate info, and "run" the game. No money is really required... Its quite a big undertaking, so if theres some people who would be interested in helping setting it up, then I may try for around christmas time.

oooh does sound good

Does sound like some kind of website or messageboard is needed tho, and i know absolutely nothing about setting that kind of thing up, (tho i could prob find someone who does) but if you need any help with any of the rest of it, i'll do my best.

i know quite a few folk who are coming 06 who would definitely sign up for that!

Reply 15

I Love the idea of this... *grows horns* Sounds like plenty of fun.

... Can't help but feel like some people have been reading a lil' Pratchett...

Reply 16

sounds bit geeky.

Reply 17

What was the point of that post then?

Reply 18

Just been discussing this one with someone.

Had a look at the old webpage for the one that used to exist at Bham, and I reckons that if you do go ahead with this, you might want to make it... less serious. All the stuff about houses and credits and vengence lists... it will put off the people who are there for fun.

I mean, if you want to attract a certain class of people then thats all good, but if you are looking for a more fun, wider reaching society, then you may want to just stick with rules outlined in the original post. Makes it a lot more easy to digest.

Also the name, for the same reason!

Just my 2 cents.
