Advise me on quitting my part time pub job

Basicly i am on a gap year. I've been temping for most of 2006. Around may i wasn't getting very many days and with a Month in Thailand booked for August 7th, i needed to earn some more money, so i applied for evening and weekend bar work at a local pub. The girl asked me how long i was looking for work and i said "a couple of months before uni". Didn't mention going away in august as i was desperate and didn't want another rejection.

A week later i got a call saying come do a shift, and it all went from there, very casually, as i never signed anything, they never even checked i was really 19/legal haha. And my pay is all untaxed. Ironically as soon as i started this second job iwas full time temping so wouldn't have needed it, but like learning the new skills. Done between 9-15 hours a week at the pub. I'd say i've been there 6 weeks now. I had no experiance in barwork so they did train me, though after 2 shifts i could do 90% of things. Anyway, i've been there 6 weeks now, thailand looms, i'd like my last day to be in 2 weeks time. Not sure how to go about quitting as i feel sorta bad, the staff are all really nice and like the landlord, when he's had a few drinks he starts saying "you've turned out into a really good barman we are proud" and stuff like that.

I'm thinking of saying that i've ended up with far more money then i thought and have decided to get a last minute ticket to go travel before university. How much notice should i give for this sort of job? I fear if i gave 2 weeks notice then if they were disappointed in me about my decision then it'd be abit awkward to work there, you know? maybe i'm just overthinking it, what would you do? I'd like to leave on a positive note so i can get a reference incase i apply for barwork at uni.
Why don't you quit in the usual way...you don't need to offer an explanation for your quitting...(just write something like 'I intend to leave me job as x,my last working day will be x.' but because they say you're such a good barman and stuff, tell them you're keen to come back during the uni holidays to work for them(if you are?)...that might soften the blow!

You never signed anything so you do not have a notice period: technically you could just leave right now. However, I would be nice and offer to work at least one week's notice. Give a letter to the manager and just say that you are going to Uni. And as mentioned, say you will be happy to work there again in holidays if you and they would both like that. People quit all the time, just be nice about it and don't worry.

If they gave you any sort of contract, written, verbal or implied, you're in trouble mate

Just tell them why you're leaving, they did know before you started that it would only be until starting uni. You could always say you need some time to get yourself sorted for uni anyway.

It is worth trying to see if they'll take you back over the holidays tho, as I've found it easier having a holiday job I can go straight back to, rather than sitting around for a few weeks trying to find somewhere to work.
