Hi guys I have my driving test tomorrow and I am really worried about the emergency stop. Whenever I hit the brakes when practising, I always hit them too hard and the wheels make a massive screech. I don't know whether that would constitute a fail or not?

I think it would be a minor. Not completely sure though.

If you completely lock the wheels at an early stage in the braking, then continue to skid to a stop, making no effort to correct the skid, then that is a serious loss of control which will be marked as a serious fault.

If you lock the wheels for an extended period of time then you've lost control and therefore will probably get a serious error for it. It sounds like you're driving a car which does not have ABS, so you need to feather the brakes if you feel them lock. If the back of the car swings left, steer left slightly to straighten it out. You'll probably find that you have better control if you leave it till the last possible second to put the clutch down. The technique I got taught for non ABS cars is to press firmly, then again, then again. If you 'stage' the braking like this then it's less likely to lock the wheels.

I could be wrong with all that, but I vaguely remember that being my instructor's opinion of how to do it in a non ABS car. I passed in a very new car with very good ABS so I could just slam the brakes on hard and not have to worry about the wheels locking up. Hope it helps though.
