Opal 2 Should I?

I'm thinking of staying in Opal 2 next year and was just wondering if there was anyone with previous experience of living there? I've heard it can lack the social element of Endcliffe. I was wondering how true this is as the main reason for me considering it is the proximity to the centre and therefore the social side that brings.

From my personal point of view as a prospective student looking to go in september 2014, Endcliffe looked the most impressive for me. and my parents thought that was the best option, just the general appearance and social element.

I lived in Endcliffe and personally wish I picked Opal but that's cause I hated the noise!

From what I found, Endcliffe obviously has a massive social element. But the fun of this sort of wares off after the first months. If your a real party person (i'm talking every, or every other night) you'll love endcliffe. It can be really noisy! But if you like that then you'll be fine. There's opportunities to socialise 24/7 but beware it's quite hard to study in this environment.

I met people from Opal in lectures/seminars etc. and they seemed to still have a really good social life . Endcliffe social life can focus a lot around flat parties, mainly cause the town is quite far away. Whereas Opal people have the option of going into town for free! The people I met from Opal were all really close and nice. They had a social life in their own Opal circles.

So basically, you'll have a social life either way.. I wouldn't worry  I even met people who lived in Ranmoor (supposedly the 'quiet' place to live) who would go out every night! It's just the type of social life.
If you can socialise very easily or you want another 15 minutes in bed then Opal 2 would be a good option, it has nice rooms and it's very close to the uni (although if you're studying medicine, endcliffe is about the same distance from the medical school as Opal 2, possibly closer). Endcliffe is definitely more sociable though as you have a lot more people around, especially in Stephenson. Ranmoor is just as social as Endcliffe but due to the much smaller size it doesn't seem as loud, also the distance may be a bit of an inconvenience.

I'd disagree with i-love-coffee however, most people don't go out that often, it's more like once or twice a week, depending on your timetable. It's only really noisy towards the beginning of the year, once you're about midway through semester 1 it gets quieter. When she says flat parties, it's more like pre-drinks with more people, before going out, where a bunch of you will probably share a taxi which'll cost about £6-8 each way for everyone, so the cost isn't really worth worrying about. If you go to the Student Union for pop tarts then you won't even have to pay that as it's within walking distance.

Stephenson as in the halls with no common room? How is that particularly social haha

Because the annoyance of being catered surprisingly helps people socialise.

That's ridiculous. I lived there. It is so unsociable, especially if your in a block rather than a hallway. People were desperate to move over to main endcliffe. Your kitchen isn't even the size of the bathroom, and the bathroom was shared between 8.
It's not as social as Endcliffe for sure but West Street is so close you're never far from a party. To me it's worth it just to be that much closer to all my lectures. I've woken up at 8:30 and made it to Hicks in time for 9 ams before, it's heavenly :P

No point in making a new thread when this is one is revelant. I have just one question for you guys.

I'll be studying at Sheffield this year and I have no idea if the molecular sciences building is on the general campus and which accommodation is closest to it. Can anyone help? I won't have much money to spend since I'm an EU student and I don't get any grants so I don't want to spend much on public transport and I want to be close to the uni. Also it has to be en-suite. I'd appreciate it if someone told me how far each one is

Hi,

Even though the University of Sheffield is not classed as a campus university, all our buildings are very close and well within walking distance of each other. All the science departments are based very close to our Students Union and all the main University buildings, so your department will be well within the heart of the University.

The accommodation closest to the main University buildings is our City Centre Accommodation. Just over 1,200 students live here, in a range of self-catering properties spread out between campus and the city centre. All the accommodation is both very close to the University and the city centre, so you would be able to walk everywhere comfortably (the city centre in Sheffield is very compact!) Our city centre accommodation is often quieter than our other two student villages, and is often favoured by students who like to be more independent.

However, if you did fancy the bustling student villages of either Endcliffe or Ranmoor, these are not a great distance away either - Endcliffe is around a 25 minute walk from the University, with Ranmoor being about 30 minutes. There is a very regular bus service, for which you will be entitled to student discount (all bus journeys across Sheffield are a flat rate of 80p for students, regardless of distance, so you won't need to worry about spending a lot of money on public transport). Endcliffe is the largest student accommodation village and is very vibrant with lots of social activities and events to take part in. Ranmoor is a little smaller and a little quieter, but there are still plenty of activities on offer.

All our accommodation locations offer en-suite rooms. There is a small amount of accommodation at Endcliffe which offer rooms with shared bathrooms, but you will be able to specify your preference for an en-suite room in your application.

You can find more information about our accommodation options here: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation/prospective/undergraduates/locations

Hope that helps! Let me know if you've got any more questions that I can help you with.

Best wishes,

Georgie, Student Communications Team at the University of Sheffield
