What does it mean to be someone's 'valentine'?

Yesterday a guy in my year gave me a rose (our school is selling them up till the 14th) and asked me to be his valentine.
I have been getting some male attention since I joined my current school in September, but to be completely honest I don't find anyone attractive, considering both personality and appearance. This is of course including the guy that gave me the rose.
I'm just hoping that being someone's 'valentine' doesn't mean dating... :s-smilie:
I f someone asked you to be their valentine, what would you assume that means??

he asked you to be his girlfriend! Or at least go out for a date on Valentine's Day
He's basically saying he likes you. And also that he probably wants to go on a date with you.
