Scansion is one of the most difficult things to teach. I really struggle to get my year 8s to get it. Some of the smartest kids just can't do it. I think it's a bit like being tone deaf or colour blind.

it requires prolonged exposure to spoken verse... people of our your generation were required to speak and memorise poetry

Yes, closed book A levels were quite a help in that respect. They are making a comeback. My year 10 nearly fainted when I told them they would have to learn quotations for the iGCSE we've just changed to.

i think that although this is a valiant attempt at rudery i will have to disallow rhyming wood with Sherwood ;
