Irwin Mitchell Assessment Centre

Hi there, has anyone been invited to an assessment centre with Irwin Mitchell? If so, are you doing anything in particular to prepare? Thanks!

As someone who will be applying to law firms soon can I ask you a few questions please?

What were your A-level results?
Which University and degree?
any tips?

 (sorry to hijack your thread)

Just to check you're aware of what a truly shocking firm they are and their reputation for treating their staff like absolute scum right?

Would you mind me asking whether you are speaking from experience or whether you know anyone who has worked there? And what sort of things have they got a bad reputation for? I haven't actually come across much bad press on them so any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, yes I heard back on Friday afternoon, but I think they get back to people at different times depending on which office and stream you have applied for. I applied to London and I hear that is one of the first as it is also one of the earliest - so I wouldn't worry about not having heard yet!

Speaking as someone with a relative who worked there happily for almost two decades and only left because their department was closed down, I wouldn't say that's really true. Irwin Mitchell has a lot of offices, in a lot of different places, run by a lot of different people, so there's inevitably going to be some variation in the way their staff are treated.

I just found out I've been invited to the Assessment day after my phone interview - I applied on the deadline day, had the phone interview on Saturday and have the assessment day next Tuesday. I applied to PLS in the Bristol offices (woooo)

Were they a partner by any chance? I imagine it's quite enjoyable working somewhere knowing the minions below you earn bugger all, have no promotion hopes and are treated like dirt and you know that by doing this you become even richer...

No, they weren't. As I said, I imagine some offices are a lot worse than others.

Hi everyone.

By the sounds of it they have changed things this year compared to last year.
They must be having AC's starting down South then leading to the North towards the end of March.

Whereas last year the North was first.

Also I think this year Irwin Mitchell Grad team conducted the interviews whereas last year it was another agency...Maybe...

Anyways, they are a fantastic law firm to be involved with! Good luck everyone!

How are they 'fantastic'? They are consistently voted one of the worst law firms to work for, their pay figures are absolutely woeful and they think nothing of making hoards of people redundant. Add to that the woeful promotion prospects and the ridiculously high PEP figures which are completely prioritised over pay rises and bonuses for associates make them far from 'fantastic'. That is of course assuming your idea of fantastic isn't being totally unappreciated and earning virtually nothing in the process.

Do you work for Irwin Mitchell's HR/PR department by any chance?

It's a secret

NQ salary of £27k outside of London = you might as well have become a milkman.

I love milk how'd you know that?

Also, who says I have a TC...hmmm..the suspense!

Or it is a clear illustration of you 'assuming' you know everything from 'reading' what other people say. Like you 'read' my above comment and presumed I had a TC when in actual fact I don't!

See everyone, don't trust a word this guy says! He/she is a proved assumption maker with no core evidence in reality, shown by his assumption of myself having a TC and of the firm.

The pay is piss poor at all the offices though- that cannot be disputed. You'd earn more as a milkman or a postie than a 3PQE lawyer at Irwin Mitchell.

Isn't that the case for a lot of NQ posts though, especially in the North? I remember my relative's pay not being great initially, but increased to a decent level after a few promotions. Call-out rates were pretty generous too (this was the criminal dept)

hey think nothing of making hoards of people redundant.

Cant argue with that tbh. Then again, with the employment situation as it is for law grads, only the outstanding candidates can afford to be too picky about TC's

what about now? I also applied to bls - my interview was ages ago (about 4 weeks) and I haven't heard from them... I'm thinking this is rejection?

My interview was over a month ago and I still haven't heard back yet! I'm not sure what to think but I assume we would have got a rejection sooner than now?

well - fingers crossed there is still a chance! despite the above"argument", it is not easy to get TC - even with IM and often there are some "lucky" factors to decide... please drop a line here if you hear from them - it will be good to know!
