UCL = Great university.

Its okay, good in Economics/Maths...but LSE, Oxbridge, Warwick are better in those respective courses and more....

Warwick? Really?
Coincidentally, Mussy123 did undergrad at Warwick.

Note how it gets added to every discussion, addendum, to Oxbridge and LSE.

I did wonder why Warwick was there along side those others!

You two obviously have deep love
Sorry, but Warwick is a very reputable University and has been consistently ranked in the top 5 for social sciences like politics and economics. Some consider warwick has the third best economics department. It has also consistently been rankd in the top 10 of all major ranking league tables and the Warwick Business School is a 5* business school with great links with investment banks like Deutsche Bank.

in terms of rankings i would consider:

1. Oxbridge
2. LSE / Imperial
3. UCL/Warwick.

LSE and imperial perhaps second, OK, but LSE only does a handful of subjects so can it really be compared? Imperial doesn't do that many either.
Those rankings might be valid for economics but for humanities and some sciences, i'm not so sure.
As for UCL and Warwick equal third, I think you're forgetting a very large number of institutions. Durham, Edinburgh, Bristol, York, Bath and Nottingham are just a few.

The fact is that there's a very large group of institutions which are pretty much equal. Few people would deny that Oxbridge still 'leads' and that LSE is very good for economics, Warwick for languages, Imperial for Medicine, but the unis i've mentioned are pretty much indistinguishable in terms of prestige.

No doubt its good uni and has a very good reputation. I used to rate Warwick as a very good uni (just cos everyone else did). After witnessing a friend getting a first class in his first year, i've changed my opinion completely. He knew jack about economics, was constantly asking me for help on some of the most basic questions on msn...and he managed to get 77% Macro and 84% in micro.

Firstly, I was shocked a good university would offer such high marks in units where it is very hard to score just a 70 (as at Bristol & UCL). At Bristol, in one of our units, only 3% managed to get a first. In macro it is rediculously hard to score over 70 (if you get 100% in the exam, they reduce it to 70% unless you produce someting you havent been taught)...but hey, maybe Wariwick just do this so that they get more grads with 2:1s above so can stand a decent chance in job applications, just a thought.
Well of course it partially depends on the particular subject... I mean we all know UCL is the best in the world for law

Not terribly surprising, given one of the factors that's dragged them up to near the top of the league tables historically is their high proportion of 1sts and 2:1s relative to similar universities.

Sorry, but you cannot assess a course solely based on the performance of your friend. I KNOW people who did Economics at Warwick, and i can tell you getting a 1st is very hard...3 of my mates got a 2:1 and one of them got a 2:2. Im really appalled that you are judging Economics at Warwick purely based on how well your friend did. Maybe he studied well for them? Maybe the areas of Micro/Macro he studied came in his exams? ....Ive been to Warwick and I know the Warwick Business School and the Economics department very well and i can tell you for a fact that it is not 'easy' to get a 1st or a 2:1, you have to work hard...If you got into those departments in the first place, you would already have that hard work ethic...Sorry, but your judgement on Warwick Economics solely based on how easy your friend got high marks is wrong. Warwick is very selective in who they take for Economics/Finance courses, some people over here have got into UCL/Bristol and havent got into Warwick...The people who i know from Economics at Warwick all were proper hardcore nerds, and they achieved 2:1 overall. And not many did get a 1st.

Oh yeah, lest we forget, there is you, a shining example of what one may come across in those hallowed Warwick halls.

Well, I think they would be more freaked out if it was you in the 'hallowed warwick halls' judging by your picture in your profile.

Oi, stop highjacking my thread.

There is a worrying tendancy in this postgrad forum to make everything about flipping finance, business and economics.

(Incidently, I turned down Warwick for Bristol for BA English. Didn't like the campus)

I can't comment on how good Warwick is for economics etc, and for the record, my friend here in Bristol who does economics does no work and failed first year. Probably second as well

But back to the issue, you warring dogs, you.

We've established UCL would be a fine place to do Masters study? (No other 'top 10' Universities offer the course anyway)
