The Biochemistry man at the open day said he gave out 600 offers for Biochem?? I don't know how that works exactly because the course only allows like 100 or less I think. I haven't heard of anyone at all being rejected..So just wondering do they give offers to everyone? I mean apart from Medicine..

Well, you have 6 choices on your UCAS form, and from my understanding of the university system and the laws of nature, no one person can attend 6 institutions at any one time. Therefore, each university has to give out far more offers than they have available places, this is done mostly on guess work based on previous years.

As for rejections, I think the Biochemistryman hit the mark. Nobody ever gets rejected from Imperial, any every Tom, Dick, Harry and their family pet makes it, it operates an inclusive, open door policy with regard to its admissions:smile:

I am so tempted to reply with anger to that....but I'll resist.

Well I actually know someone who got a Biochem offer of AAB from Imp last year when she was only predicted BBB. She subsequently got BBD, missed both her Imp offer and insurance, and had to find a place somewhere else on clearing. It does make you wonder why Imperial gave out such a stringent offer to someone who was so unlikely to achieve it.

Okay i can't resist.....what a load of rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sure it might not be THAT hard but it is probably as hard, often harder than the other univs in the top 8 ish. (bar oxbridge).
For the post starter, the people you talk to here are mostly the high achievers anyway so it's likely they will have applied to and attained offers from the best places! I'm sure if you took a cross-section of people with different qualifications, grades and other achievements who applied, the results would be different. It stands to reason that only someone who is interested in academia/good unis etc would frequent a board such as this and clearly they are more likely to be the strongest candidates.

Also makes you wonder why she'd apply and accept offers to places she (according to you) obviously wasn't going to get into.

Maybe because they wanted to give her a chance, and if she couldn't grasp it then fair dos...that's her problem.

I've heard that Imperial is notoriously difficult to get into for Maths nd heard that their interviews are almost impossible, so I'm fairly sure lots of people do get rejected, particularly for maths.

Well she applied to Imp on the off-chance and I think they must have thought she was doing re-sits or something, but it still seems a bit weird. She has really good GCSE grades but she's the first person to admit she dossed around at 6th form. Thing is, if you get an offer from somewhere as good as Imperial it's probably worth putting it as first choice just in case. Makes you wonder exactly what selection criteria they use though.

if its so easy to get into, why is their alevel points average just over AAB?
edders

He was being sarcastic, Imperial is the 3rd best uni in the UK.

EDIT: Just over AAB? Last time I looked it was nearly AAA.

Actually, I got rejected from Imperial for Chemistry. But thats not because of my grades. I take IB and i'm missing some of the courses required, thats why they rejected me

Well, if you are paying higher fees then you can understand the issues surrounding it...

yup bono's right.
Think about it..... money is going to be really attractive to all these English univs as they're so underfunded. Don't get me wrong I'm sure you are a very good candidate, but I suspect if there were two very similar candidates(ie similar grades etc) but one was international and one was a home student, the international student would get the place. It would explain why you might not know anyone who was rejected from the place...

That's quite a nasty thing to say, incinuating that he might not deserve his place. Imperial aren't short of a bob or two, and I would expect them to give the places to those students who they think deserve them the most.

Besides, if I understand correctly the number of international students are capped at 10% for any UK uni. Surely Imperial, popular for a UK uni with international students, must reject a fair number of internationals?
