Toning Up and Staying Healthy

Hi everyone. Basically, since I started university last September I've gone from 11 stone to 12 stone 2. Considering I'm a 5'9" guy, that's only slightly overweight, but my problem is that it's all gone on my stomach and nowhere else really.

I'm eating healthier than I was at home and despite doing no exercise at home (I would walk at least 3 miles a day at university) I still feel healthier. However I'm not losing this stomach.

Considering I'm not a very sporty person and need to do more exercise, what's the best thing to do to a, keep me healthy on the inside and b, get this stomach back to what it was and maybe even tone up a little bit - I don't want to be very muscly though!

Thanks for the help.

well....considering you dont do many sports....it is always beneficial to do sit-ups..especially in the morning as you may feel as though your stomach seems flat due to there being not much inside it...therefore...working on your abs in the morning is great as you'll burn off plenty of fat...Do loads of sit-ups and leg lifts to the point of exhaustion....stick your feet under the sofa or something...and if you want to lose it fast....i suggest wearing a bin liner or two as you'll sweat like a pig and burn that fat faster. GOOD LUCK:smile:

Don't listen to a single word of that crap!

1. it's best to do sit-ups in the morning because it is flatter as you don't have much in it? this makes you burn more fat? wtf!? All it means is you won't be able to work as hard because you need food for energy.

2. Situps don't burn fat- they build the abs. i can't believe people still think there's such a thing as spot-reduction.

3. wearing a bin liner or two to sweat of weight? jeez, you really don't have a clue. this will dehydrate you. you will lose weight; this weight is water. you will put it on again when you have a drink. how can dehydrating oneself "burn that fat faster"? quite the contrary.

It's good to see you're trying to help, but please only post if you know what you're talking about. in the politest way i can manage, your post contained the biggest amount of rubbish i have ever seen in a post about fitness!

I wouldn't say 12 stone is overweight really for your size, but it depends on what the weight is...whether it be muscle of fat.

Becoming toned and healthy is not exactly a secret, determination is needed, eat right (cut out simple sugars), go the gym and do cardiovascular (e.g. running, cycling, etc.) to lose weight and become healthy, and to be toned I'd lift weights (free weights are better than the machines generally)

For more tips on toning up/building muscle, the bodybuilding society has lots of people giving good advice, who know what works and what they're talking about.

I highly doubt you were being sarcastic. But if you were; well done, you fooled everybody. Next time try and be helpful you absolute fool.

In terms of your insult at the end; STFU. Don't insult others to hide your inferiorities. It takes guts to ask for help.

Cock.

Just thought I would say to lose weight you have to be burning off more than you are eating. I know this sounds obvious but many people think that if they eat healthy and exericse they will lose weight regardless. They may lose weight but only if they are burning off more than what they eat.

Maybe try keeping a food diary. You may think that you eat healthily but small things can really add up and can prevent you from losing weight eg alwaya having a couple of biscuits with a cup of tea, lots of dressing on salads, thickly spread butter on bread. I am not saying that you necessarily do any of this but they are examples of how someone may not realise how much they are consuming and therefore wonder why they are not losing weight.

Exercise is essential to feeling and looking good. You don't have to do a lot but being active at least 3 times a week for 30 mins- 1 hour each time is a good starting point. Also doing resistance work will help you build muscle and lose fat because it increases the amount of lean muscle mass you have which burns calories. Try to do work with weights about 2 times per week (more if you want to do a split routine) but like the others have suggested the bodybuilding society will be very helpful in this area I'm sure.

i dont think wearin a bin liner is crap advice i no loadsa people who have done it and it makes you sweat more which makes you loose weight fast!!
+ its only a suggestion doesnt nessecerly mean he has to do it but make sure you drink plenty of water to flush out the fat and toxins that you are burning off when exercising!!

It is not a good idea to do loads and loads of cardio as too much actually causes you to lose muscle which will slow your metabloic rate, making it harder to lose fat.

You've just completely contradicted yourself. Firstly, you say wearing a bin liner is not necessarily crap advice because you sweat more and lose weight quicker. This weight you are losing is not fat; it is water. You are saying it's good to lose weight by dehydration.

Then you say it's important to drink plenty of water, ie, it's good for losing weight if you hydrate.

Just for the record, it doesn't matter whether you think wearing a bin liner is good for losing weight; the fact is, it isn't- it's extremely unhealthy. Of course, it is important to drink lots of water.

Please don't post advice if you don't have a clue what you're on about. There's a difference between being helpful and giving potentially dangerous advice that can cause serious problems (eg, using bin liners for cardio can severly dehydrate you, eventually causing your brain to stop functioning properly).

I may have overreacted, but it's important to learn the facts; not make them up.

air enuff aced but theres many people out their who claim that the bin liner stuff works for them....regardless...plenty of cardiovascular exercise is the key....no way round it....youve got to be dedicated n comitted to burn off the excess weight.
