Speeding ticket, new driver help.

Ok yesterday at 1:00 in the morning I got flashed by a speed camera. I looked at my speedo and I was doing 44. I thought it was a 50 zone, turns out it's 30, as when I come back, I saw everyone doing 30, and flashing me.

Now here's the interesting bit, I've only been driving 32 hours prior to this, yep, I passed on Friday. I'm so worried about this, did anyone go through something like that?

If I do get the tickets and points, can I appeal against it fo being a new driver? I'm not a boy racer or anyhting, I just mis-rad the situation. If I do get the points, do they go off in a year?

Will this affect my insurace?

What do you mean appeal against it?? Course you can't, you were going too fast, if you can't read little signs then you shouldnt be driving.

And yes, you need to tell your insurance, and if you get one more ticket in the next 2 years you lose your license.

Serves you right.

I was originally on a 50 zone, I didn't see no 30 sign. The only thing that told me it was a 30 was people flashing me on the way back, there were no 30 signs.

Sorry buddy but the points will stay on your license for a long as you have it, they won't disappear next year. Just learn from this, when you see the signs for speed cameras, make sure you slow down when you come across one.

they don't stay on your lisence forever.. they do eventually go, but i'm sure because he is a new driver, it's in 2 years rather than a couple of months.

and sorry guys, but if there were no signs, which sometimes there aren't, you can't have a go at him, especially as he has just passed his test. as most people say, passing your test is the easy part.. learning to drive comes afterwards.

mate, just be careful now. if you get another ticket then you will have your lisence taken off you and you will have to take every part of the test again (theory and practical, and i'm sure you have to have some refresher lessons)

i'd get out your theory book and just have a flick through it. refresh your memory on the rules of the road, and just be really careful. after two years, it's not quite as bad. i think you only get a suspension from driving if you get too many points.. but by then hopefully you will know all the rules of the road and know how to tell how fast it is in a certain place.

you know it is 30 in an area because the area must be built up, and have lamposts on the road.

I'm thinking about gettting a road angel now, I'm seriously worried. I hate myself for this, I wish I wasn't so blind.

Reccomendations for a road angle?

you don't need to fork out £200 for a sat nav just to know where the speed cameras are. they are normallty signposted well in advance, so i really wouldn't bother. just be a bit more alert

Whenever there are speed cameras you see these-

And either speed signs, if there are none or as pumpkin said there are lamp posts, it is a 30 limit.

We've got a couple of Road Angels and they've been great. I wouldn't like to be without one now....
Just don't speed - if it doesn't say otherwise then it is a 30, remember that and you won't go far wrong.

Points stay on your licence for 4 years I think - then you can have them removed.

I am not going to condem you - you're a new driver and it sounds like a genuine mistake - just be careful from now on.

I never see those signs before speed cameras :/

@ OP: Just because you got flashed doesnt mean you will get a fine+points, you might be lucky and there might not be any film in it.

Thing is, I don't tear arsea round either, the only reason I was out this late was becasue I wanted to practise going into Derby on my own, as it is reeally nasty to just jump in at the deep end, and go in the middle of the day.

I just took a wrong turn from a 50, and it was still a wide 2 laned road (Two lanes each side), so I thought it was still a 50.

Yo probably do because i'm pretty sure they have to be there. Not necessarily ebfore cameras, just in the same general area.

hmm maybe then, i thought you meant within 100/200 metres of the camera :p:

The golden rule I remember is that if there aren't signs at regular intervals telling you the limit, it's 30 in urban areas i.e. not on the motorway or country roads

Ohhh thats crap! I think it's just unlucky, sometimes, especially around where i live signs LOVE to be placed in places where large bushes grow infront of them, so unless you know the area well in terms of you driving...which you obviously didn't, being out there to practise, then it's an easy mistake to make. I guess you've just got to see if they send you anything and work out what your going to do from there.
At least you won't make that mistake again!

I doubt you'll get your licence taken away... although it would be impressive if you did! I thought you only won 6 points if you were 30 over the limit, could be wrong though.

If you get 6 points within 2 years of passing your test, you lose the licence. depending on how much you exceeded the speed limit by depends on the severity of the punishment.
