I'm assuming you are referring only to organic compounds here (ie. carbon chains). It's a lot to explain and I don't really have an idea of how much you know. Have a look at http://www.chemguide.co.uk/basicorg/conventions/names.html and http://www.chemguide.co.uk/basicorg/conventions/names2.html#top. If there is anything unclear, feel free to ask. As far as I know, these pages cover the basics of converting names into molecules and viceversa and covers all functional groups needed for A Level which is more than you need to know, but will give you the right set of skills.

Precisely the kind of thing I was looking for; not overcomplicated. Thanks very much!

Glad I could help! If you need some help feel free to ask.

I think for GCSE the only ones you need to know for the organic chemistry section include:
alcohols which are the -OH functional group
carboxylic acids which are the -COOH functional group
esters which are the -COOC functional group

I wasn't sure what exam board he was doing. For my exams I had to know all of them appart from aldehydes and ketones. Varies for different exam boards. I'm not so sure about esters. If I remember corectly for GCSE all you have to recognise is the O=C-O link, but I could be mistaken.
