What is an Extended Project?

I posted the other day if you recognise my username on what GCSE's I should pick. I'm wondering now though, what is an Extended Project? Is it a good qualification? I would like to get as many GCSE or related qualifications done as possible for my unrealistic dream of going to Cambridge University. If it is a good qualification what do you have to do? Can I do it in Wales? ( I'm welsh and I'm proud, we don't all count sheep you know) Thanks for your help!

I would normally associate the extended project with the EPQ, but that's an As qualification. Which exam board runs this?
