I'd go for QM myself....don't know why though.

I was a member of the QM, mostly (one year I forgot to join either union). It's right opposite the maths building where I had my lectures, whereas the GUU is at the other end of University Avenue. The QM is okay; the food is pretty average cafeteria fare and there's only one woman working in the coffee shop who can actually make a decent cup of coffee. The stereotype seems to be that QM members are more diverse, but GUU ones are law students/rugger buggers/Daddy's princesses. Having only frequented the snack shop in the GUU, I don't know if there's any truth to that.

Funny I feel quite the same way- no idea why! Maybe it's because of associations with QM residence which looks so nice:rolleyes: I know it has nothing to do with it, but...

Oh I just checked and QMU is just near the Modern Languages Building. My guts are always right :p:
I was QMU, but went to GUU more often.

GUU is mainly for, meds, vets, law and sports clubs.

QMU music types and kids who wanted to join a union that doesnt have rugger-buggers and bottle blondes throughout.

But as I say, GUU had the cheaper nights and I thought it was more fun plus the beer bar was top class. But for day to day, QMU.

For the two seconds that I was at Glasgow (go droupouts!), I went to the QM.

Not that I could drink at the time because of my meds, but I preferred the atmosphere.

Why did you dropout?

Hey guys thanx for the replies! i was just wondering for some of us scottish students who wont be quite 18 at freshers week is that a huge problem? Do you need ID to get in to the unions etc??:p:

I really don't understand why you would go to University before 18. It doesn't make sense.

The pupils in a yeargroup at a Scottish school are those born between 1st March to 28/29th Feb, rather than 1st Sept to 31st Aug as in English schools. So approximately half of all Scottish students (those with birthdays between Oct and Feb) will still be 17 when they start uni. Also, Scottish students can go to university a year early because Highers are sat in the penultimate year of school.

yeh thats me! i've just finished school but i'm not 18 until october!
It really is a crap system - I would have been old enough had I not done my gap year, but a lot of people on my course had to wait for ages to drink in the unions.

Oh, don't try fake ID etc. in the unions - you can get in serious **** with the University itself, so it's not worth it. You have been forewarned.

Joined QM last year, and this year I'll be GU, as the Hive is the superior night out, and the Beer Bar rules. QM is good for quick instead-of-a-lecture games of pool though, and the sandwiches at the QM are a hell of a lot cheaper... The GU does have it's own Subway in the union though...

Can't you go to both?
You can, and I do - but it's a matter of choosing which one to join!
Reply 17
Meaning that if you join one you can still take part in the other's activities? Such as the debating soc?
Not a clue to be honest, but I don't think the societies are even associated with a particular union - they are simply affiliated to the uni in general. There will be things you cannot do when you're not a member, but I don't know what they are.

Ah - one thing - you can actually join both unions, but because of the GU's rules, it doesn't really work properly; Best bet is choosing one and joining - if you don't like it, quit, and join the other.

Did you get hassle for joining both unions then? Wondered if anyone did. I joined both and never had any probs, just kept my cards apart from each other in my wallet! I don't think joining one prohibits you from doing anything except joining in with the running of the union you haven't got mambership for. The QMU might be a tad peeved if a GU member ran for QMU president....

Hive is on a thursday and is a laugh. Cheesy pop is on a Friday at QMU so it is possible to do both and be mingamingamongmonged for two days in a row if you are of the alcoholic persuasion. Even if not but you like dancing in a pit crammed with hot, sweaty people trying to dance like John Travolta and looking more like Chico, you should have a good time.
