Hello, is there anyone taking A-level music with Edexcel? If so any ideas on the genre of music for the first question on the listening test. If you did last years paper (2002) as a mock this was the Rock and Roll 50'5, Elvis Presley question. I dont know what sort of music they will ask us to name the performer so I have been listening to all sorts.

There is the possibility of asking performers within Jazz music... You'll need to know the decades for Ragtime, Swing, Boogie-woogie, New Orleans/DixieLand, Bebop, Post-bebop, Hard bop, Cool Jazz. They'll undoubedtly ask one of the popular jazz artists such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong...
There is always the chance of Popular music, Delta Blues etc...
If you have a wide selection of listening material you should know it, last years one was a doddle though, even if you dont listen to Rock and Roll, everyone knows Elvis!

I think they'll play something from the 60's, and expect you to know music of that era
- 14-06-2003 20:03
They will probaly play some 60's porn music
- 14-06-2003 20:05
Know any porn music artists?? NO-and NEITHER DO MOST PEOPLE,THEY ARE MORE INTERESTED IN WHAT CAN BE SEEN RATHER THAN WHAT IS HEARD.
- 14-06-2003 20:12
They'll probably play some S Club 7...

I have my music A2 listening with OCR on the same day...
Your exam sounds fairly good compared to these essay questions we have to write at the very end about the integration of something topical (religion, art, ethics of stealing/borrowing) in music.
Good luck anyhoo.

I've heard OCR make it harder in music... you should get your school to change to edexcel
- 16-06-2003 23:16
tell me about it. It's hard, but Ive been studying West Side Story and other musicals for the last year..it hasn't been all bad.
And I'm the only one taking music A level in my school...

*is now panicking*
hardest bit on the edexcel past papers was the transcribing what u hear part...they slyly put it at the end of the paper, so you're in such a mad rush at the end before running outta time that its easy to mess up...
and am still gonna have to find a way of miraculously understanding what exactly is going on in Debussy's "prelude a l'apres midi d'un faune" thing before tomorro...o well!
good luck 2 everyone tomorro!!!
- 20-06-2003 00:08
the good thing is you are given the cd. so you can rush through part a, and spend lots of time on melody writing...
- 20-06-2003 23:33
how did people find it...?
