Kitchen Fixed Charge

What exactly is this? Do you pay this on top of any individual meal charges? And what if you want to do your own cooking? Someone please explain!
Is there a specific college you're referring to here?

Each College does things differently, so I'll generalize on what is true for most colleges, but you'll have to check what is the case for your college.

The KFC is designed to cover the fixed costs of dining such as the chefs wages, cost of electricity etc. It is normally paid each term and is in the region of £150 but varies greatly between colleges. There's normally no way out of the KFC, you'll just have to pay it, even if you never eat a single meal in hall.
The up side of the KFC is that you only pay for the cost of the raw ingredients of the food you eat so the cost of each meal is quite cheap.

Most student rooms are close to a small kitchen known as a gyp room, again these vary greatly between colleges and within accommodation blocks within the same college but will typically have a sink to wash things in, a kettle to boil water for your cup of tea/coffee/cuppa soup and a fridge to keep your milk/beer in. It might have a toaster, it may possibly have a microwave or even a George Foreman grill. it almost certainly won't have a hob. Despite being of legal age to vote and fight in wars and attending one of the worlds most intellectual universities, the insurance companies think you are too stupid to be trusted to cook on a naked flame! Despite the cramped conditions and limited facilities it;s amazing how ingenious some students can be when preparing food in the gyp room, who knew you could cook sausages in a sandwich toaster for example.

Every gyp room I ever went in (not just in my own college) had an electric hob!

No ovens though, except for in a handful of colleges.
