I'm trying to write an essay for the Value of Art topic, and I'm completely stumped. I'm trying to find the right word to reference philosophers who value art based on representation/ expressive qualities/ formal qualities. I think formal qualities might just be formalist (i.e. "Clive Bell is a formalist"). I'm looking for something like "Empiricist" or "Idealist", but I can't really say "Expressionist" to describe the critic, because that's for the artist, isn't it? Bah. I'm so confused. Have looked all through the workbook for my course (NEC) and have found nothing I can use. I'm considering "Expressive theorist"... but I'm not sure that makes sense. Any ideas?
